Following Flamengo’s 2-0 victory in a rescheduled Brazilian Serie A match, the Mirassol head coach highlighted his team’s superiority in the second half.

Flamengo secured three vital points last Wednesday (Oct 2) by defeating Mirassol 2-0 in a rescheduled match from the fourth round of the Brazilian Serie A. Although the final score was determined in the first half with goals from Jorge Carrascal and Lucas Paquetá, the match featured distinct narratives throughout the 90 minutes, prompting a detailed analysis from the opposing coaching staff.

While Leonardo Jardim’s side exerted technical dominance in the first 45 minutes, holding 59% possession, the São Paulo-based team managed a consistent response after the break. Rafael Guanaes’ post-match assessment focused on his team’s ability to react despite the away defeat.

Match Analysis

Regarding the defensive errors that allowed Flamengo to move forward, Guanaes was emphatic about the lack of focus at critical moments. According to the coach, the team struggled with defensive transitions following set-pieces and failed to adjust properly after being reduced to ten men before halftime.

The coach stated during the press conference:

“I also liked the first half; we had good moments. On the first goal, we conceded a counter-attack in a situation where we were set to attack Flamengo from a set-piece. We didn’t read the play well, and then we failed in our coverage. The second goal occurred at a time when we were down a player.”

Second-half superiority

In the second half, Mirassol’s approach changed drastically. With more attacking intent, the team pressured Flamengo’s defensive system, which found itself pushed back and registered only one shot on target, while the visitors recorded seven attempts and even hit the woodwork.

The coach added:

“In the second half, we had much more volume. Flamengo demands a lot of focus and concentration to defend against because they have so much individual and tactical quality. If I’m not mistaken, they only had one shot on goal. Our chances were better. If we had converted Formiga’s or Fernandinho’s opportunities, it could have given us the energy to fight for the result.”

Table impact and upcoming fixtures

The win kept the Rubro-Negro in second place in the national league with 51 points, just one behind Palmeiras, making the final stretch of the season increasingly decisive. Meanwhile, Mirassol remains in 16th place with 25 points, fighting to move further away from the relegation zone.

Now, Leonardo Jardim’s squad turns its full attention to the 26th round of the Brazilian Serie A. Flamengo travels to Belém to face Remo this Sunday (Oct 6) at 4:00 PM (Brasilia time) at the Mangueirão stadium. The match is seen as crucial for the team to stay in the title race and maintain pressure on the league leaders.
