Peñarol presidential candidate Pablo Schiavi has promised to make an extraordinary effort to sign Flamengo stars Arrascaeta and De la Cruz in a bid to take the Uruguayan club to the next level.
The presidential race at traditional club Peñarol, scheduled for the end of this year, has taken on a bold and internationally ambitious tone. Attorney Pablo Schiavi, who heads the Movimiento Libertadores political movement, has put major names in South American football at the center of his campaign speech, setting his sights directly on key players in the Flamengo squad.
In an interview with the Uruguayan program Punto Penal, the candidate did not shy away from big expectations when listing the reinforcements he intends to pursue should he take over the aurinegro management. Schiavi‘s strategy, although sounding like a high-impact promise, faces severe contractual barriers and the economic realities of Brazilian football.
The promise behind the campaign
Schiavi‘s speech is accompanied by a promise to thoroughly overhaul the squad, pointing to the need for the club to reclaim its continental prominence. In addition to the two Flamengo midfielders, the candidate also mentioned an interest in bringing back forward Miguel Merentiel, who currently plays for Boca Juniors.
“We will do the impossible to bring De Arrascaeta, De La Cruz, and Merentiel to Peñarol. We need a leap in quality”, stated the presidential hopeful.
Transfer market reality and current contracts
It is essential to highlight that both Arrascaeta and De la Cruz have solid ties with Flamengo, with contracts running through the end of 2028. For the Rio de Janeiro club, which made million-dollar investments to secure both players, releasing such athletes would require complex negotiations and figures far removed from the financial reality of Uruguayan clubs.
In the case of De la Cruz, Peñarol had already attempted a move in the second half of the year, which ultimately fell through due to salary disparities and the economic weight of the transaction. Meanwhile, Arrascaeta, who has a well-known fondness for the club where he started his journey as a supporter, has demonstrated on various occasions that his current focus remains in Rio de Janeiro, despite childhood dreams.
Electoral landscape and next steps
The Peñarol election, scheduled to take place between early and mid-December, will determine the administrative future of the club. While Schiavi seeks ground with ambitious promises, other strong names are already formalizing their candidacies, pointing to a tightly contested election focused on institutional restructuring.
The feasibility of these signings remains, for now, in the realm of political intentions. For the aurinegro supporters, the “obsession” with the Copa Libertadores appears to be the main fuel for campaign speeches, while Flamengo continues to prioritize keeping its star-studded squad intact for the season’s decisive fixtures.
