Norway’s head coach acknowledges Brazil’s status as favorites but bets on an upset against the national team in the World Cup.
The Norway national team is preparing for one of the biggest challenges in its history at the 2026 World Cup: facing Brazil in the Round of 16 in New Jersey. In a press conference, head coach Stale Solbakken did not shy away from reality, admitting the Brazilian team’s favoritism while making it clear that his squad believes in a historic upset.
Betting on an Upset
Solbakken was emphatic in acknowledging Brazil‘s strength. “Brazil is still the favorite,” the Norwegian manager declared. However, he emphasized that the possibility of winning exists. “We can beat Brazil, but to do that, we will have to play at 100% of our capacity. We do have a chance to beat Brazil,” he stated, showing ambition and confidence in his team for the decisive duel.
Concern Over Brazil’s Attack
One of the focal points for the Norway coach is the offensive power of the Brazil national team. Solbakken specifically mentioned Vini Jr. and the variety of options Carlo Ancelotti has at his disposal. “We have to see if we can handle the mix of combinations that Brazil’s attacking trio will bring. They can play with four players up front,” he analyzed, also considering the height advantage his team might have. The strategy is to minimize Brazilian possession and exploit the spaces.
Matchup and Expectations
Regarding the possibility of his team being the tournament’s surprise, Solbakken did not hesitate: “Yes, I think it would be an upset.” He also downplayed the importance of individual duels, such as Erling Haaland versus Gabriel Magalhães, emphasizing that the clash will be between the two teams. The game is scheduled for Sunday at 5:00 PM (Brasília time), with the promise of high intensity and, perhaps, an unexpected twist in the tournament. In the event of a draw, the match will be decided in extra time and, if necessary, on penalties.
