Neymar hints at national team farewell after World Cup elimination.
The pain of Brazil’s defeat to Norway in the 2026 World Cup Round of 16 appears to have brought a cycle to a close for Neymar with the Brazil national team. The No. 10, who scored Brazil’s only goal in the 2-1 loss, showed deep emotion as he left the field. His words, laden with sentiment, suggest a possible end to his World Cup journey, a farewell that resonates across the country.
A Cycle Ends
After the final whistle, Neymar was in tears and gave an interview suggesting a definitive end to his World Cup career. “I tried, I tried. Now it’s over. I started here, I finished here,” the star declared in a conversation with geTV. The reference to MetLife Stadium, the venue for his national team debut in 2010 in a friendly against the United States, adds a layer of symbolism to this statement. The choice of location to evoke his start with the national team reinforces the perception that 16 years of dedication wearing the yellow jersey may have come to an end in terms of World Cups.
Repercussions of the Elimination
Although he has not officially retired from the senior national team, Neymar‘s statement is seen as a strong indication that his World Cup participation has concluded. This elimination, in addition to its personal impact on the player, extends a title drought for the Brazil national team, marking its worst campaign since 1990. Individually, Neymar joins Thiago Silva as the second Brazilian to play in four World Cups without lifting the most coveted trophy in world football. The future of the Brazil national team, now without one of its greatest World Cup icons, is a question mark hanging over fans.
