Goalkeeper Marcelo Rangel shares Pedro’s reaction after his miraculous save in the match against Remo

The Flamengo 1-0 victory over Remo this Sunday (06) featured an unlikely protagonist: goalkeeper Marcelo Rangel. The shot-stopper pulled off a play now being called a ‘miracle’ following a strike from Pedro, the Rubro-Negro forward. In a post-match interview, Rangel revealed the striker’s reaction and his own perspective on the moment.

“Pedro even joked with me: ‘How did you do that?’ I told him: ‘It wasn’t me, it was God through me.’ I would have traded the individual performance for the win, but unfortunately, it didn’t happen.”

The comment highlights the goalkeeper’s sportsmanship, as he lamented his team’s defeat despite his standout performance.

The ‘Miracle’ by Marcelo Rangel

The play in question occurred ten minutes into the second half. Following a cross from Ayrton Lucas, Pedro found himself in a prime position inside the six-yard box, with the ball in the air and the goal at his mercy. The striker struck it first-time, in a move that seemed destined for the back of the net. However, Marcelo Rangel stretched out impressively to make a spectacular save, denying what would have been Flamengo‘s second goal.

Rubro-Negro head coach Leonardo Jardim also acknowledged the importance of Rangel‘s intervention, citing it as one of the best saves of the season:

“Pedro only didn’t score today because the goalkeeper made two spectacular saves. He made two saves on headers, one from Pedro. And on the second one, he made perhaps the best save of the year in the league. He closed his eyes and managed to push the ball away, which everyone already counted as being inside the net.”

Flamengo secures victory and shifts focus to the Libertadores

Despite Marcelo Rangel‘s inspired performance, Remo could not hold back Flamengo‘s momentum. Nineteen minutes into the second half, Arrascaeta delivered a precise pass to Samuel Lino, who poked the ball into the back of the net, sealing the win for the Rio-based team.

With the result, Flamengo now turns its attention to the Copa Libertadores. Next Thursday (10), Leonardo Jardim‘s squad will face Independiente Del Valle (ECU) in Quito for the first leg of the quarterfinals. The team is looking to maintain its strong form across all competitions.
