Libertadores Goals Bring Hope to the Atlantic Forest!
The excitement on the fields of the CONMEBOL Libertadores 2026 gains an even greater purpose with an initiative from Mapfre. For the first time, every goal scored in the competition will be converted into concrete environmental action, with the planting of three native trees in the Atlantic Forest.
The insurer, an official sponsor of the tournament, combines a passion for soccer with a commitment to sustainability, transforming the sport into an agent for environmental restoration and carbon sequestration.
The Round of 16 is already underway, and with every goal that finds the back of the net, a step is taken towards the recovery of degraded areas. So far, with 286 goals scored since the preliminary phase, the initiative already guarantees the planting of 858 saplings.
This project reinforces the role of large companies in supporting ESG practices, demonstrating that sports success can go hand-in-hand with ecological responsibility. The expectation is that the number of trees planted will grow exponentially until the grand final in Montevideo.
Restoration and Biodiversity in the Atlantic Forest
The saplings from this campaign will be allocated to Jurupará State Park, a natural refuge in São Paulo, recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site.
The technical execution, in partnership with Reservas Votorantim, ensures that the planting follows rigorous scientific criteria, aiming for the survival of the vegetation and the rebalancing of the local ecosystem.
This action not only aims to recover the rich flora of the Atlantic Forest but also directly contributes to climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration.
A Green Legacy for Soccer
With a projection based on the offensive performance of the previous edition, the campaign could result in the planting of over 1,100 trees, equivalent to the restoration of approximately one hectare of forest. This innovative initiative shows how the insurance sector and concern for clean energy can converge for a positive social and environmental impact.
Fátima Lima, Mapfre’s director of sustainability, highlights the ability of major events to mobilize and raise awareness:
Major events have the capacity to mobilize people and give visibility to topics that remain relevant long after the competition ends. Our proposal was to leverage this reach to support an environmental restoration project that leaves a legacy. Each goal now contributes to the recovery of areas with native species, as part of an initiative conducted with technical monitoring and results that can be measured over time.
This action aligns with a growing trend in high-performance sports: using visibility to promote environmental awareness. Mapfre’s sponsorship of the CONMEBOL Libertadores transcends the sport, actively investing in the health of the planet and ensuring that this season’s legacy extends far beyond the pitch.
