Cruzeiro head coach Artur Jorge has warned of the physical fatigue facing his squad ahead of their decisive Copa Libertadores round-of-16 showdown against Flamengo.
The grueling schedule of the Brazilian football calendar remains the primary obstacle for teams competing for the continental title. Cruzeiro, under the guidance of Portuguese manager Artur Jorge, is currently navigating a period of high physical demand.
The coach has made no secret of his concern regarding his players’ physical recovery ahead of the showdown with Flamengo. After defeating Corinthians in the Brazilian Serie A, the coach acknowledged that the current run of matches requires exceptional mental and physical resilience.
The focus is now entirely on the Maracanã, where the visiting side will look to secure a spot in the Libertadores quarterfinals.
The psychological factor as a driver
Despite the physical exhaustion, Artur Jorge believes that their recent victory in the domestic league serves as the necessary fuel to keep their competitive edge sharp.
The manager emphasizes that success on the pitch is the best remedy to mask the aches and accumulated fatigue:
“It is a very demanding period for us, but we must prepare in the same way, because what masks fatigue is winning. We need the ability to fight and try to win every time, because winning brings a different kind of energy and makes us emotionally more capable.”
Absences and the weight of the match
Cruzeiro is facing additional challenges due to a growing injury list, which limits Artur Jorge‘s options for his starting lineup.
The absence of key players, such as defensive midfielder Matheus Henrique, forces the coach to adjust his tactical scheme to counter Flamengo‘s offensive firepower in front of a capacity crowd.
“We must have the collective ambition to maintain this intensity in our matches. Our first Libertadores final is already coming up this Wednesday.”
The first leg, held at the Mineirão, ended in a 1-1 draw, leaving the tie wide open for the decisive second leg.
Since the away goals rule is no longer in effect, any draw will force the match into a penalty shootout to determine who advances.
For Flamengo, the focus is now exclusively on this Wednesday’s (19) clash at 9:30 PM (Brasília time). The winner of this series will face the victor of the tie between Tolima and Independiente del Valle in the quarterfinals.
The atmosphere in Rio de Janeiro is one of total mobilization, with the Rubro-Negro supporters preparing a warm reception for the squad at the Maracanã.
