An unusual scene took place during Flamengo’s U-15 Copa do Brasil match this Sunday (02), when a macaw surprised center-back Valmir during the game at Granja Comary.
A truly bizarre moment caught the attention of fans during the clash between Flamengo and Ceara in the U-15 Copa do Brasil youth tournament. While play was underway at the Granja Comary training facility in Teresopolis, a macaw made an unexpected dive toward center-back Valmir, who had to dive to the ground to avoid contact with the bird.
The incident occurred in the 17th minute of the first half, just as the Flamengo player was dropping back to clear the ball. Despite the scare caused by the bird, the young player from Fla suffered no injury and was able to resume the match immediately afterward.
Why did the bird attack?
Wildlife experts explain that behaviors like this, although rare, are generally linked to territorial defense. According to biologists, the macaw may have felt threatened by the movement on the pitch, reacting instinctively to protect its space near the training center.
No wild animal usually approaches human beings like that. Macaws are gentle.
This statement was made by biologist Neiva Guedes, president of the Arara-Azul Institute, in a recent interview with the Campo Grande News portal.
The match result
On the pitch, Flamengo did not have the same success as their center-back did in dodging the bird. The Rio-based club was defeated by Ceara 2-1, with a consolation goal scored by Deivid Sousa for the youngsters from Ninho do Urubu. With the loss, the Rubro-Negro made an early exit from the national youth competition.
Despite the elimination, Flamengo’s campaign in the Copa do Brasil was considered consistent. The team topped Group A7 with nine points and recorded significant wins during the tournament, such as a 4-1 victory over Fluminense and a 5-0 win over Sao Raimundo.
Future outlook
For the M360 team, the unusual episode does not overshadow the positive outlook for the development work carried out by the club. Even with their exit against Palmeiras due to fine margins in later stages, the current U-15 generation has demonstrated promising football, indicating that the talent development project at Flamengo continues to produce important results for the coming years.
