Three Brazilian clubs have already secured their spots in the Libertadores quarterfinals; check out the qualified teams and potential matchups.
The Copa Libertadores de América is beginning to finalize its representatives for the quarterfinals, and the landscape already features a strong Brazilian presence. Five clubs have secured their spots among the top eight teams on the continent, with three of them hailing from Brazil: Flamengo, Fluminense, and Palmeiras. The list of qualified teams so far is completed by Argentina’s Estudiantes and Platense.
How did the clubs qualify?
The Round of 16 delivered thrilling matches and a few surprises.
Fluminense punched their ticket to the quarterfinals after a tight contest against Independiente Rivadavia. Following a goalless draw at the Maracanã, the Tricolor das Laranjeiras drew 1-1 in Argentina, eventually winning the penalty shootout 5-4.
The Rio de Janeiro side’s next challenge will be against Platense, who eliminated Chile’s Coquimbo Unido. The Argentine team also required a penalty shootout, winning 7-6 after two 1-1 draws on aggregate.
Estudiantes also confirmed their place in the next round by overcoming Universidad Católica-CHI with a 3-0 away win, following a 1-1 draw in Argentina. The La Plata team is on the same side of the bracket as Corinthians, who are still seeking their spot against Rosario Central.
Meanwhile, Palmeiras secured their qualification by defeating Cerro Porteño 1-0 in Paraguay. Combined with their 1-1 draw in the first leg, the result sealed the Verdão‘s advancement. The São Paulo side’s quarterfinal opponent will be the winner of the tie between LDU and Mirassol.
Flamengo completed the Brazilian trio in the quarterfinals after overcoming Cruzeiro. Coming off a 1-1 draw in Belo Horizonte, the Rubro-Negro won 2-1 at the Maracanã.
The Rio club now awaits the outcome between Tolima and Independiente del Valle to learn their next opponent.
