Flamengo to Discover Libertadores Opponent This Tuesday!
Flamengo is eagerly awaiting to find out who their next opponent in the Libertadores will be.
The decision will be made today (25th), with the clash between Independiente del Valle and Deportes Tolima determining the final spot in the tournament’s quarterfinals. The first leg, which was supposed to take place last week, was postponed due to an earthquake in Colombia, and kickoff is set for 9:30 PM.
Decisive Match with Ecuadorian Advantage
Independiente del Valle enters the field with a slim advantage, having defeated Deportes Tolima 1-0 away from home.
Playing in Quito, the Ecuadorian side will have the support of their home crowd and the altitude as allies. For Flamengo, who are vying for the Libertadores title, understanding the challenges each team might present is crucial.
Recent History Between Giants
Both Del Valle and Tolima have had recent matchups against Flamengo.
In 2020, Rubro-Negro had high-scoring encounters against the Ecuadorian team in the Libertadores itself, in addition to defeating Del Valle in the 2020 Recopa Sudamericana and finishing as runner-up in 2023. Against Tolima, Flamengo emerged victorious in the round of 16 of the 2022 Libertadores, with two wins.
Del Valle Impresses with Consistency
Independiente del Valle has shown a consistent season, leading Group H of the Libertadores with one of the best campaigns.
At home, the Ecuadorian team boasts an impressive record, with few losses throughout their participations. Furthermore, they comfortably lead the Ecuadorian Championship and are on a 15-game winning streak.
Tolima: The More Accessible Option?
On the other hand, Deportes Tolima appears as a theoretically more accessible opponent, playing at a lower altitude. Their campaign in the Libertadores was more irregular, finishing second in Group B.
In the Colombian Championship, the team is in third place. However, regardless of who qualifies, Flamengo will face a long trip, but with the advantage of playing the deciding leg at home due to their better overall performance in the tournament.
