CONMEBOL confirmed on Monday (21) the schedule for the Copa Libertadores semifinals. Football fans can prepare for heavyweight matchups, with four teams battling for a spot in the continental tournament’s grand final. The dates and times have been made official, focusing on the clashes that promise to ignite the month of October.
Brazilian Showdowns Set
The semifinal stage will feature two Brazilian giants. Fluminense and Palmeiras will face off in a national battle. The first leg is scheduled for October 14, at 9:30 PM (Brasília time), at the Maracanã Stadium. The return match will take place on October 21, at the same time, but this time with Palmeiras hosting at Nubank Stadium. Packed stadiums and intense rivalry are expected in both encounters.
Flamengo Seeks Final Against Estudiantes
In the other bracket, Flamengo will face Argentina’s Estudiantes de La Plata. The first leg will be held on October 15, at 9:30 PM, in Argentina. However, the exact venue remains a point of attention. Estudiantes’ home ground, Jorge Luis Hirschi Stadium, faces an issue regarding capacity for visiting fans, a requirement from CONMEBOL. The clubs’ management is seeking a solution to ensure the match proceeds normally, which could involve expanding the area or an agreement to limit the number of supporters.
“We are in negotiations to resolve the issue of visitors. We want everyone to be able to watch a great game, respecting CONMEBOL’s rules and ensuring everyone’s safety,” stated a spokesperson for the Argentine club.
The second leg, which will determine the other finalist, is confirmed for October 22, also at 9:30 PM, at the iconic Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Flamengo hopes to count on the massive support of its fans to overcome any deficit and advance in the competition.
Millions in Prize Money at Stake
Beyond the sporting glory and the coveted Libertadores trophy, success in the tournament’s final stages yields significant financial rewards. The champion will secure a prize of 25 million dollars (approximately R$ 129 million). The runner-up will receive 7 million dollars (around R$ 36 million). Teams eliminated in the semifinals, in turn, will pocket 2.3 million dollars (approximately R$ 11.85 million), a substantial financial consolation for their journey in the continental competition.
