Defender Léo Ortiz‘s return ends concerns in Flamengo‘s defensive sector, creating a “good problem” for coach Leonardo Jardim when selecting the lineup.

The Rubro-Negro faithful can celebrate news that has been anticipated for two months. Cleared by the medical department, defender Léo Ortiz is once again available to the coaching staff and is expected to be among those selected for Sunday’s classic against São Paulo at the Maracanã, in the Campeonato Brasileiro.

The defender, who has not played since late May due to a thigh muscle injury, intensified his training during the mid-season break. With his return, coach Leonardo Jardim achieves the unprecedented feat of having the entire defensive squad available, consolidating the group’s strength for the decisive remainder of the season.

A Sector in Full Swing

Having all players available presents a tactical challenge for the Portuguese coach: deciding who will be the undisputed starter in a defense that proved solid in the first half of the year. On the flanks, the competition has heated up. Emerson Royal is in great form and has surpassed Varela, while the left side remains under observation, with Ayrton Lucas being inconsistent and Alex Sandro seeking his peak physical condition.

In central defense, the duo of Léo Ortiz and Léo Pereira, which started the year as the preferred pair, now must contend with the rise of other players who seized opportunities during the No. 3’s absence.

Vitão’s Rise

Defender Vitão was one of the standout performers during the mid-season break. Gaining valuable minutes and chemistry with João Victor, the player showed maturity and convinced the coaching staff that he can compete for a regular spot in the first team.

“This mid-season break was very good for me to get consistent playing time and show the ‘Mister’ more of my playing style, my game behavior. Even though you train at the highest level, we know that playing matches is different. I am very happy with the consistency, and I hope to continue working and making the most of the opportunities.”

Looking Ahead

Flamengo concluded the first part of the year with impressive statistics, boasting the second-best defense in the country, having conceded only 16 goals. The challenge now, with the start of the knockout stages of the Libertadores and the continuation of the Brasileirão, is to maintain this performance amidst fierce internal competition. Jardim will have to decide whether to maintain the rotation that kept the squad sharp or to select a definitive starting lineup to pursue the season’s titles. Grit, love, and passion will be abundant in this fight for spots.
