The Nação’s reunion with the Maracanã ended in frustration. A disallowed goal in stoppage time prevented Flamengo from clinching a victory over São Paulo, leaving the final score at 1-1.

Sunday at the Maracanã had that atmosphere that only Rubro-Negro fans can create, but the outcome of the match against São Paulo left a bitter taste. In a tactical and hard-fought duel for the 20th round of the Brazilian Serie A, Flamengo pushed for the win until the final whistle, only to see technology play the leading role in a decisive moment.

The team coached by Leonardo Jardim showed drive and determination, but struggled against the defensive organization of Dorival Júnior‘s side. With the draw, Mais Querido now has 38 points and must turn the page quickly to continue the hunt for the league leaders.

Dominance on the pitch and VAR frustration

The match was a tactical chess game from the start, with both teams having goals ruled out for offside in the first half. The deadlock was only broken in the second half, when Léo Pereira, capitalizing on a precise cross from Lorran, put Flamengo ahead. The euphoria was short-lived, however, as Calleri equalized for the Tricolor Paulista with a header.

In the final moments, the Maracanã erupted when Samuel Lino found the back of the net in stoppage time. However, the joy was cut short by a rigorous VAR review.

Technological precision, while necessary, ended up becoming the main obstacle to a Rubro-Negro victory at a time when the team’s pressure was overwhelming.

Looking ahead: The upcoming stretch is vital

The performances of players like Erick Pulgar, Alex Sandro, and the tireless Bruno Henrique showed that the squad is alive and committed to the motto of “Grit, Love, and Passion.” The Rubro-Negro squad has no time to lament the intervention of the video assistant referee, as the schedule is unforgiving.

The next challenge is a major one: Internacional at the Beira-Rio. The match, scheduled for next Wednesday (29) at 7:30 PM, will be a crucial opportunity for Flamengo to get back on the winning track and prove the strength of their group on the road during the decisive stretch of the Brazilian Serie A.
