Barcelona’s young star puts himself in the running for football’s most coveted individual award.
The race for the Ballon d’Or is heating up with ambitious statements. Barcelona‘s young forward, Lamine Yamal, surprised many by positioning himself as one of the main contenders for the coveted individual award.
In a recent interview, the Spanish prodigy stated that, based on his performance and achievements this season, he believes he deserves to be named the world’s best player, envisioning a direct battle with French star Kylian Mbappé.
Confidence and Boldness in the Race
Yamal‘s remarks mark a shift in his stance. Previously, the player had shown more caution when addressing the topic of the Ballon d’Or.
Now, with remarkable confidence, he doesn’t hesitate to point to himself and Mbappé as the season’s main figures.
Yamal stated:
Who would I give it to? To the best player in the world. Who will win? That’s a very long conversation. Honestly, I believe we two are the best in the world, and for what I’ve achieved, I deserved to win this year. For me, it’s Mbappé and I. That’s clear, and anyone who follows the games knows that.
Support at Camp Nou and Mbappé’s Ambition
Lamine Yamal‘s talent has not gone unnoticed within Barcelona. Head coach Hansi Flick has already praised the forward, considering him a special player deserving of the Ballon d’Or.
The club’s vice-president, Rafa Yuste, has also publicly expressed his desire to see the young Spaniard recognized.
On the other hand, Kylian Mbappé has also made his ambition for the award clear. The Frenchman has been vocal about his goals, citing his career and achievements, particularly with the national team, as credentials for the victory.
His viewpoint has even led him to state that he would vote for himself for the Ballon d’Or.
A Competitive Landscape
Despite the confidence expressed by Yamal and Mbappé, this year’s Ballon d’Or shortlist features other strong contenders, each with solid arguments for winning the award.
Among those considered are:
- Rodri, named the best player of the World Cup
- Fabián Ruiz, with a trophy cabinet full of titles
- Harry Kane, Europe’s leading scorer
- Kvaratskhelia, one of the standout players in European football
Lamine Yamal himself revealed, in the same interview, that his personal performance evaluation is even more rigorous than that of others.
Even after important achievements, he expressed a desire to go further, demonstrating an insatiable appetite for more.
The decision on who will lift the Ballon d’Or will take place on October 26th, at a ceremony to be held in London.
