Jorge Jesus opens his heart and regrets the challenges of a potential return to Flamengo.

Renowned manager Jorge Jesus, a beloved icon among Flamengo supporters, has once again expressed his affection and the special connection he shares with the Rio-based club. In recent remarks following Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway in the Nations League, ‘Mister’ revealed his true feelings and admitted that a return to Ninho do Urubu has become increasingly unlikely. For him, his tenure at Flamengo remains one of the highlights of his career, defined by significant titles and a profound emotional bond with the fans.

“It means a lot (Flamengo). Perhaps it was the best period of my career as a club coach. It was a historic milestone, not just in sports, but also sentimentally. The way the fans embraced and cherished me, I will never forget,” Jesus told ESPN, adding, “I always thought that one day I might be able to return to Flamengo, but now I am certain that things have become more difficult.”

The Near Return of Jorge Jesus to Flamengo

The journey of Jorge Jesus at Flamengo, which ended in 2020 due to the pandemic, was glorious and crowned with five major titles: Libertadores, Brazilian Serie A, Campeonato Carioca, Supercopa do Brasil, and Recopa Sudamericana. Since his departure, the Portuguese manager’s name has frequently been linked to the club during periods of technical instability, particularly during the stints of Paulo Sousa, Dorival Júnior, and Vítor Pereira.

Flamengo‘s vice president of football, Marcos Braz, met with Jorge Jesus on more than one occasion between 2022 and 2023, hoping for a return. However, the coach chose to honor his commitments to Benfica, and on another occasion, the timing was unfavorable, as the club had already reached an agreement with Paulo Sousa just days before Jesus was dismissed from the Portuguese side.

Current Situation of Jorge Jesus

At 72, Jorge Jesus is currently in charge of the Portugal national team, with a contract running through December 2030. His decision not to renew with Al-Nassr after winning the Saudi Pro League in the 2025/26 season led him back to international football. His start with Portugal has been promising, with victories over Wales (1-0) and Norway (2-1), proving that ‘Mister’ remains highly regarded on the international stage. The desire to revisit Gávea is currently on hold, but his emotional attachment to the club and its fans remains intact.
