Flamengo deepens its ties with the NFL, leveraging the historic event at the Maracanã to expand its global brand and boost American football in Brazil.

This Sunday, Rio de Janeiro will host a historic milestone for Brazilian sports, as it stages the first official National Football League (NFL) game in the country. The Maracanã will host the anticipated clash between the Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens, drawing the attention of fans and media to the capital city of Rio de Janeiro.

At the epicenter of this event, Clube de Regatas do Flamengo is strategically positioning itself. In addition to providing its facilities – the iconic Maracanã and the modern Ninho do Urubu training center – the Rio club is strengthening a long-standing partnership with the American football league. The main objective is to boost its brand’s visibility, capitalizing on the growing interest in the sport in Brazil.

Expansion and Growth Strategy

This closer relationship with the NFL represents a dual opportunity for Flamengo. Firstly, the club is closely monitoring the remarkable growth of American football in Brazil, an expanding consumer market. Secondly, it sees the event as a showcase to accelerate the internationalization of its already powerful brand. The presence of a global event like the NFL Rio Game reinforces this strategic vision.

Flamengo‘s marketing director, Ricardo Hinrichsen, expressed the club’s enthusiasm for the initiative. In a statement, he emphasized:

At Flamengo, we see the growing popularity of American football in Brazil as a great opportunity. Therefore, it’s a pleasure to be close to the NFL and this historic event at the Maracanã.

Léo Ortiz: A Link Between Worlds

Defender Léo Ortiz emerges as a crucial element in strengthening the connection between soccer and American football. Known as a big NFL enthusiast, the player attended the Dallas Cowboys‘ practice at Ninho do Urubu. His participation and personal involvement help to humanize and bring these two sporting passions closer to the Brazilian public.

History of Unprecedented Collaborations

The partnership between Flamengo and the NFL is not new. In 2022, former fullback Filipe Luís took part in an unprecedented moment by announcing a player’s selection in the NFL Draft, in a joint action with the Miami Dolphins. That project, which saw Filipe Luís at Christ the Redeemer, already hinted at the possibility of a league game at the Maracanã, a dream that is now coming true.

At the time, Filipe Luís, now a coach, expressed great optimism about a game taking place in Rio de Janeiro. He commented:

It would definitely be packed. It would be really cool, a spectacular opportunity to see these players here in Brazil.

Exclusive Line Launch and Vince Lombardi Trophy

In another initiative to strengthen the partnership, Flamengo launched an exclusive apparel line, combining the club’s and the NFL‘s brands. The collection, which includes jerseys, jackets, and sweatshirts, celebrates the historic game.

The club also received the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy, the ultimate symbol of the Super Bowl victory, at Ninho do Urubu, providing its athletes with a unique experience of contact with the glory of American football.

Flamengo Working Behind the Scenes

Flamengo‘s integration with the NFL event extends to the medical area. Two professionals from the club’s professional medical department, cardiologist Luiz Macedo and orthopedic surgeon Fernando Sassaki, have been temporarily hired by the league.

They will play crucial roles in assisting the teams, with Luiz Macedo coordinating the NFL‘s medical department and Fernando Sassaki working with the Dallas Cowboys, ensuring specialized support for visiting athletes.

The NFL Rio Game transcends a mere sporting match; it solidifies Brazil as an expansion hub for international leagues. For Flamengo, the partnership with the NFL not only reinforces its pioneering spirit in embracing new sports and markets but also paves the way for future collaborations, projecting the “rubro-negra” brand onto an increasingly integrated and diversified global stage. The initiative is a testament to the potential of sport to unite cultures and expand horizons.

The Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens will face each other this Sunday (27), at 5:25 PM (Brasília time). The live broadcast of the NFL Rio Game will be available on sportv and ge tv, with open signal. TV Globo will broadcast the halftime show, featuring Pedro Sampaio and Ricky Martin, and a highlight reel of the main moments of the game after the program “Fantástico”.
