Leonardo Jardim, Flamengo‘s head coach, criticized the lack of maturity and the “childish giveaways” from his team following their loss to Cruzeiro, which prevented the club from taking the lead in the Brazilian Serie A.
Flamengo suffered a 2-1 defeat against Cruzeiro in a match played at Mineirão for the 24th round of the Brazilian Championship. The result prevented the Rio-based club from claiming the top spot in the standings, fueling frustration among fans and the coaching staff alike. The comeback defeat, after Flamengo had taken the lead, raised questions about the team’s consistency during decisive moments.
In a press conference, head coach Leonardo Jardim offered a critical analysis of the performance, pointing to the squad’s lack of maturity as one of the primary reasons for losing their second-half advantage. The Portuguese coach did not mince words when describing the “childish giveaways” and the difficulty the team had in maintaining control of the game.
Post-Match Analysis at Mineirão
Despite a strong start where Flamengo managed to create opportunities and open the scoring, the team failed to manage their lead. Jardim noted that fatigue was a natural factor, but allowing the opponent to gain momentum while playing at home was a crucial error. Cruzeiro‘s comeback was sealed with goals in the second half, including one in stoppage time that finalized the score.
“That was the story of the game. We started well, created chances, and could have scored another. We weren’t able to keep the ball in the second half; fatigue is normal, but we allowed the opponent to grow while playing at home.”
Turnovers and Game Management
Leonardo Jardim emphasized the importance of holding onto a lead once ahead. According to the coach, Flamengo‘s inability to manage possession—especially as players grew more tired—opened spaces for Cruzeiro to exploit via counter-attacks. The “childish giveaways” were cited as evidence of this shortcoming.
“Certainly, when you have the lead, it is always important to hold onto it. Opponents react. The important thing is when we have the ball, even with added fatigue, to manage the game with experience and not give the opponent what they want—the counter-attack—and not lose the ball easily. Today we couldn’t manage that, with what were even childish turnovers.”
Substitutions and Squad Fitness
The coach also addressed the second-half changes, explaining the introductions of Evertton Araújo and Plata for Erick Pulgar and Samuel Lino. According to Jardim, some players were overloaded due to the high intensity of recent matches. He acknowledged that Carrascal did not have his best game, but prioritizing squad management to avoid burnout was essential.
“Carrascal had been playing well. Today he wasn’t at his best level, but we needed to manage some players who were overloaded. Erick (Pulgar) was already showing difficulty continuing, just like Lino.”
Table Position and Upcoming Challenges
With the loss, Flamengo remains in second place in the Brazilian Serie A with 45 points, two behind league leaders Palmeiras. The team needs a quick recovery to keep their rivals from pulling away. Mais Querido‘s next commitment will be a classic clash against Botafogo next Sunday for the 25th round, a match that promises to be decisive for their title ambitions.
Defense and Transfer Market
Regarding the defensive system, Jardim stated that the goal is always to reduce opponent shots, and that the number of attempts conceded has been low. However, the quality of the goals they have conceded—many from outside the box or difficult plays—has been an issue. As for potential new signings, the coach chose not to comment, delegating that responsibility to the board and focusing on the work with the available athletes.
“Our goal is always to reduce the number of opponent shots, and in that regard, we have achieved low numbers. What has happened is that we have conceded some great goals… We need to defend better, and when I talk about defending, I don’t just mean the goalkeeper, but the whole team.”
The loss to Cruzeiro and Leonardo Jardim‘s comments reinforce the perception that Flamengo requires more consistency and maturity to compete for the Brazilian Serie A title. The team will face a major test in the next derby against Botafogo, a match that could dictate the pace of their campaign in the coming rounds. Searching for solutions and the ability to learn from mistakes will be crucial for the team to reach its goals for the season.
