The Iraq national team has requested FIFA for special authorization to wear its black uniform in their match against Senegal this Friday (26), in a gesture of deep cultural significance.

The quest for a historical tribute sets the tone behind the scenes of the match for the 2026 World Cup. The Iraqis submitted a formal request to world football’s governing body, aiming to honor the memory of Imam Hussein, grandson of Prophet Muhammad. The date coincides with the period of Ashura, a moment of extreme importance for Shiite identity.

The Significance Behind the Choice

The day of Ashura, celebrated on the tenth day of the lunar month of Muharram, commemorates the martyrdom of Hussein during the historic Battle of Karbala, which occurred in 680 A.D. In Iraq and several Muslim-majority nations, black is the color traditionally associated with mourning and respect for this foundational event. The Iraqi federation wishes, by wearing this uniform, to convey a message of cultural and religious significance to the global audience during the tournament.

Anticipation for FIFA’s Decision

The match between Iraq and Senegal takes place this Friday (26) at 4 PM, but the uniform selection is still under review. FIFA’s regulations regarding national team equipment are strict and pre-determine the colors for each match to avoid visual conflicts. Last-minute changes, such as the one requested by the Iraqis, require exceptional authorization that is rarely granted without a detailed protocol.

Should FIFA approve the request, fans will see Iraq debut its third uniform for the first time in this World Cup. The black model is part of the team’s official kit, which also includes the traditional green and white jerseys. The entity’s final decision will determine whether the team takes the field wearing the uniform in tribute to Imam Hussein or maintains the uniform originally planned for the decisive clash against the Senegalese.
