Prominent former players, including names with spells in Rio de Janeiro football, find themselves caught up in an investigation regarding fraudulent coaching certificates issued by Alejandro Mancuso.
A scheme involving the sale of irregular diplomas for football coaches has come to light, placing elite former athletes at the center of an international investigation. Former Argentine defensive midfielder Alejandro Mancuso, who had a notable stint with Flamengo in the 1990s, is accused of acting as an intermediary in the sale of forged credentials in exchange for amounts reaching up to 100,000 Brazilian reals.
The allegations reveal that major football figures sought a shortcut to obtain professional licensing without having to complete the regular coursework hours. ATFA (Association of Argentine Coaches) classified all documentation distributed by the former player as fake, emphasizing that the organization never authorized such facilitation for high-performance former athletes.
How the facilitation scheme worked
According to journalistic findings, the commercialized package promised four distinct levels of certification, ranging from youth categories to the international PRO standard. The selling point boasted by the former athlete was the waiver of classes and the rapid delivery of paperwork by mail, under the justification that victorious careers dispensed with traditional academic rigor.
Despite the promise of immediate validity, the legitimate process requires years of progressive study, theoretical evaluations, and mandatory practical training. Argentine authorities analyzed the case and conducted searches, although the legal proceedings were closed based on the understanding that no crime was committed within the investigated sphere.
The reaction of the involved athletes
The list of those cited includes major figures in world sports, such as former athletes Petkovic, Paolo Guerrero, Felipe Melo, and center-back Thiago Silva. While some confirmed the payment and lamented the scam, others claimed they believed it was an automatic recognition of notorious sporting knowledge granted to established professionals.
Felipe Melo stated in a deposition regarding the case:
I figured the licenses might be fake when I started asking for in-person classes and Mancuso never scheduled them. I thought: This is wrong. The first thing I did was take it down from my social media because I was showing off that I was an ATFA member, right? And then I asked for my money back. Unlike many others, I managed to pull that off.
For his part, Alejandro Mancuso categorically refutes all accusations of selling diplomas. In his defense, the former midfielder argues that he merely served as a point of contact due to his prominence in Brazil, denying any employment bond or official representation with the neighboring country’s coaches’ association.
The episode exposes the vulnerabilities in career transition processes for former footballers and serves as a warning about the strictness required by bodies such as Conmebol and CBF for the validation of technical competencies. With the net tightening around irregular credentials, the search for shortcuts in coaching management is now viewed with much greater regulatory rigor.
