Flamengo has finalized its roster for the season by signing American center Sam Freeman, formerly of Argentina’s Quimsa, aiming to dominate the paint in the NBB.
Flamengo has made official the arrival of center Sam Freeman to strengthen the red-and-black squad for the 2026/27 season. At 25 years old and an imposing 6’10” (2.08 meters) tall, the American athlete lands in Rio de Janeiro to meet the physical demands of the team led by coach Demétrius Ferracciú.
The move crowns the planning of the “Pride of the Nation” front office in its pursuit of dominance on the court. Coming from stints in competitive international leagues, the reinforcement is set to add depth to the Rio team’s paint in upcoming competitions.
Sam Freeman‘s International Journey
A native of Dallas, United States, Sam Freeman built his collegiate career at traditional institutions like Minnesota, Pacific, and California State San Bernardino. He later expanded his basketball career to alternative and competitive markets.
In 2025, the athlete played for Mandurah Magic in Australia, where he averaged an impressive 17.6 points and 9.7 rebounds, in addition to a stint with Harem Spor in Turkey. More recently, he played for Argentina’s Quimsa, participating in 35 games with a shooting percentage above 57% from the field.
The athlete stated:
My expectations upon arriving at Flamengo are very high. It’s a historic club, and I believe we can achieve many victories and go very far.
Expectations and Upcoming Challenges
The new red-and-black center commits to delivering daily intensity on both ends of the court. The coaching staff expects his physical presence to bring defensive solidity and offensive efficiency in the paint.
The announcement comes shortly after “Mais Querido” secured its second consecutive championship in the NBB Opening Tournament against Brasília. The team’s immediate focus now shifts to the Carioca Championship final against Fluminense.
In October, the team will begin its campaign in the NBB and also in the South American League. However, the basketball schedule may undergo logistical changes due to date conflicts with the Maracanã stadium, directly impacting scheduled games against Botafogo.
