Despite the stumble against Cruzeiro, Flamengo maintains the mathematical advantage of controlling its own destiny in the race for the top of the Brazilian Serie A table.

Despite a 2-1 setback to Cruzeiro last Saturday (22) and Palmeiras’ emphatic 4-1 victory over Vasco, Flamengo still holds its fate in its own hands in the fight for the Brazilian Championship title.

The club’s confidence is sustained by the schedule, which leaves the team managed by Leonardo Jardim with one game in hand compared to the competition leader.

Currently, Palmeiras sits at the top of the table with 51 points, while the Mais Querido has 45.

However, the rescheduled Matchday 4 fixture against Mirassol, set for September 2 at the Maracanã, is viewed as the key to closing the gap and reigniting the pursuit of first place.

The Path to the Top

The Rubro-Negro’s strategy to reach the top relies on two mandatory pillars: winning the game in hand against Mirassol and overcoming the direct clash against Abel Ferreira’s squad.

If successful in both, Flamengo will pull even with their rivals from São Paulo in points.

Tie-breakers and Deciding Factors

In the event of a tie in the standings, the first tie-breaker—total number of wins—would also be even.

Consequently, the lead would be decided by goal difference. Currently, both teams boast a goal difference of +24, indicating that every goal will be decisive in the final stretch of the Brazilian Serie A.

The second encounter against Palmeiras is scheduled for Matchday 36 at Nubank Parque, with a base date of November 22.

Focus on the Derby

Before shifting attention back to the decisive matchups, Flamengo is enjoying a week of rest due to the Copa do Brasil quarterfinals.

The team returns to the pitch next Sunday (30) at 4:00 PM (Brasília time) to face Botafogo at the Maracanã in a match valid for the 25th round of the national tournament.

The classic derby against the Alvinegro will be broadcast live on Globo, GE TV, and the Premiere system.
