Flamengo overcame the 2,850-meter altitude in Quito by defeating Independiente del Valle 2-0, securing a strategic advantage in the Libertadores quarterfinals.

Flamengo has taken a decisive step toward the Conmebol Libertadores semifinals. In a tactically disciplined performance at the Estádio Olímpico Atahualpa, the team managed by Leonardo Jardim overcame the physical toll of Quito’s altitude and the intense local heat to beat Independiente del Valle 2-0 in the first leg of the quarterfinals.

The victory not only puts the Rio de Janeiro club in a comfortable position for the return leg but also breaks the opponent’s unbeaten home record in this edition of the tournament. The result reinforces the maturity of the Rubro-Negro squad in continental away matches, consolidating the emotional control necessary to withstand the Ecuadorians’ pressure.

Second-Half Dominance

After a cautious first half that included a scare when a shot hit Rossi‘s post, Flamengo adjusted their lines and found space. The offensive sector operated with surgical precision in the final half, highlighting the group’s technical quality.

“The solidity shown by the team in sustaining the initial pressure and being lethal with the opportunities created in the second half demonstrates the group’s evolution when facing challenges imposed by logistics and adverse weather conditions,” assesses the M360 Team.

Bruno Henrique and Léo Pereira Take Center Stage

The opening goal came in the 15th minute of the second half. Samuel Lino advanced down the flank and set up Bruno Henrique, who celebrated his 120th goal in a Rubro-Negro shirt, reaffirming his status as the team’s top scorer in this competition.

Shortly after, in the 29th minute, it was Léo Pereira‘s turn to extend the lead. The defender capitalized on a set-piece play, initiated by Plata and finished by Emerson Royal, sealing the 2-0 result that brings composure for the reunion with the fans at the Maracanã.

Next Steps

With the advantage built in Ecuador, Flamengo now turns its attention to the Brazilian Serie A. The team takes the field next Sunday (13th) to face Corinthians in Rio de Janeiro, in a crucial duel to maintain their competitiveness in the league table.

The match to decide the spot in the Libertadores semifinals is scheduled for next Thursday (17th), also at the Maracanã. The Rio club can advance with a draw or even a loss by a one-goal margin.
