Flamengo has filed a motion with the STF to warn about a R$ 430 million shortfall in national sports if the total ban on betting sites is maintained by the government.

Flamengo has decided to take official legal action in Brazilian courts to detail the economic impacts of the recent government decision regarding the betting market.

The red-and-black institution filed a request to act as an amicus curiae in a lawsuit currently before the Supreme Federal Court, which is evaluating the constitutionality of the Provisional Measure responsible for banning so-called betting companies in the country.

The Rio de Janeiro board’s initiative aims to provide technical data to the justices of the country’s highest court.

The primary focus of the legal intervention is to demonstrate how a sudden drop in revenue directly affects the sports ecosystem, extending far beyond the strictly budgeted expenses of the professional men’s football team.

Financial Impact on the Balance Sheet

Behind the scenes at the Maracanã, internal projections point to an indirect multibillion-dollar loss and an immediate shortfall of R$ 430 million.

This amount encompasses not only the figures agreed upon with the current primary sponsor, but also the stability of long-term investments.

Flamengo’s management argues that legal security was undermined by the sudden shift in regulatory rules.

The M360 Team pointed out:

The intention is to present technical arguments regarding the effects on the maintenance of Olympic sports, youth academy divisions, and current contracts.

National Football Landscape

The measure announced by the administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva dismantled the operating model for fixed-odds betting companies within the national territory.

The ban hits the elite of the country’s most popular sport hard, as 14 of the 20 participants in the Brazilian Serie A feature brands from this sector on the front of their jerseys.

Major clubs in the national top flight share space with multi-million-dollar agreements signed with sportsbooks.

Among the most significant partnerships are deals like Betano with the Rio club, Sportingbet with Palmeiras and Vasco, as well as Superbet associated with São Paulo and Fluminense.

The outcome of this legal dispute at the STF will serve as a barometer to define the financial future of Brazilian sports in the coming years.

While awaiting an official stance from the judiciary, club executives are seeking alternatives to mitigate potential losses and ensure the financial health of teams affiliated with the CBF.
