Matchday 22 of the Brazilian Serie A has shaken up title projections, with Flamengo closing the gap on leaders Palmeiras and heating up the competition in the final stretch of the season.
Matchday 22 of the Campeonato Brasileiro brought significant twists to the title race, as well as the qualification and relegation zones. The tournament landscape has taken on new dimensions, especially at the top of the table, where Flamengo‘s victory and Palmeiras‘ stumble have recalibrated the odds for the main contenders.
Last weekend’s results directly impacted statistical projections, intensifying the fight for the trophy and for survival in the top flight of national football. The analysis from Gato Mestre, a tool specialized in probabilities, revealed key movements that promise to keep things exciting in the coming weeks.
The Rubro-Negro advance in the title race
Flamengo‘s 2-0 victory over Vitória at the Maracanã allowed the Rio club to cut Palmeiras‘ lead to six points in the standings. The team still has a game in hand against Mirassol, with the potential to reduce that difference to just three points with a win.
While Flamengo did their part, Palmeiras played out a scoreless draw against Internacional at home. Given this scenario, Gato Mestre‘s projections indicate a drop in Palmeiras‘ title chances from 59.52% to 50.30%.
Meanwhile, Flamengo‘s potential to be crowned champion rose from 31.57% to 40.21%, a leap of 18 percentage points.
Mid-table movements and the relegation zone
At the top end, Athletico-PR beat Santos 2-0 away from home, but their title chances saw only a modest change, moving from 5.36% to 7.54%. With every matchday, the window for teams in the chasing pack to gain ground is narrowing.
In the fight against relegation, Grêmio stood out by defeating São Paulo 2-1. With those three points, the gaúcho side saw their chances of remaining in Serie A for 2027 jump from 51.64% to 67.71%.
Conversely, Santos fell into the bottom four (Z-4) following their loss to Athletico-PR, and their survival probability dropped from 70.08% to 62.58%. Mirassol and Vasco also recorded dips in their survival odds following a defeat and a draw, respectively.
The race for Libertadores spots
In the battle for a place in the next Libertadores, Cruzeiro had a positive round. The Minas Gerais side climbed two spots after beating Mirassol 3-1, and their chances of qualifying for the continental tournament increased from 17.84% to 31.77%.
Likewise, Corinthians, who defeated Bragantino 2-0 away, moved up to seventh place in the table, just one point behind Cruzeiro and Bahia. Their chances of securing a spot in the South American competition rose from 16.63% to 28.63%.
Methodology of the projections
The probabilities presented are the result of Gato Mestre‘s statistical models, which use the “Expected Goals” (xG) metric. This analysis is based on microdata from 5,154 Brazilian Serie A matches since 2013, considering factors such as shot distance and angle, goalkeeper presence, body part used, shot type, play origin, player position, team market value, and score difference.
For each unplayed match, 10,000 simulations are performed using the Monte Carlo method, which calculates the chances of teams winning and finishing the season in each position using a Bivariate Poisson statistical distribution.
Matchday 22 of the Brazilian Serie A made it clear that the season is far from decided. The reduction of Palmeiras‘ lead by Flamengo promises an even more electrifying second half of the season at the top of the table, while the fight for Libertadores spots and against relegation remains intense.
With crucial matches ahead, including Flamengo‘s clash against Cruzeiro in the Libertadores, every game will be decisive for the championship’s outcome.
