Cruzeiro’s equalizing goal, scored by Arroyo, has reignited the debate among Flamengo fans about Agustín Rossi’s reliability in goal.
Defensive solidity has been a constant challenge for Flamengo this season. Despite a period of good results, the team, managed by the coaching staff, still shows weaknesses that lead to goals conceded at crucial moments in matches, as was evident in the clash against Cruzeiro last Saturday (22nd).
The match, which ended in a 2-1 defeat for the Rio de Janeiro club, brought questions about goalkeeper Agustín Rossi‘s performance to the forefront. Although they opened the scoring with Pedro, Mais Querido (Flamengo’s nickname) allowed the equalizer early in the second half, a play that put the Argentine goalkeeper in the negative spotlight for fans on social media.
The Play That Sparked Controversy
In Cruzeiro’s equalizing goal, Arroyo advanced down the right flank, found space against the marking of Samuel Lino, and attempted a placed shot. Although he reached the ball, Rossi couldn’t make a clean save, and the ball ended up in the back of the net.
The Equipe M360 highlighted:
Inconsistent saves on medium and long-range shots have been the main argument for fans questioning the goalkeeper’s absolute starting position at this stage of the Brasileirão.
Scenario at the Flamengo Goal
Despite frequent criticism behind the scenes and on digital channels, the goalkeeping hierarchy remains unchanged. In addition to Rossi, Flamengo has Andrew and Dyogo Alves available in the squad, but neither the board nor the coaching staff show any intention of making changes.
Agustín Rossi‘s contract is still valid, and the Argentine has the status of an undisputed starter until the end of 2026.
With the negative result in the direct confrontation, the Gávea-based club remains at 45 points, occupying second place in the Brazilian Serie A. The pressure is now mounting, as Palmeiras, with 48 points, has consolidated its position in the fight for the top spot, forcing the Rio team to return to winning ways urgently to avoid falling behind in the race for the national title.
