With grit and resilience, Corinthians defeats Rosario Central, ending a four-year drought and securing a heroic qualification for the 2026 Libertadores quarterfinals.

On a night of sheer determination at the Neo Química Arena, Corinthians exorcised a ghost that had haunted the club since 2022. By defeating Rosario Central 1-0 this Wednesday (20), Timão confirmed their spot among the top eight teams in the Copa Libertadores.

The triumph, however, was built on resilience: the team led by Fernando Diniz had to overcome the early red card of midfielder Raniele still in the first half.

The qualification not only keeps alive the dream of a second continental title but also brings significant financial relief to the club’s coffers. Advancing to the quarterfinals guarantees a substantial prize, valorizing the black-and-white team’s campaign in the South American competition and strengthening the planning for the 2026 season.

Hugo Souza and the Spirit of Resilience

On the field, goalkeeper Hugo Souza was one of the night’s standout performers. Besides ensuring defensive solidity under pressure, the shot-stopper used the moment to send a strong message.

After facing an episode of racism involving the opponent, Hugo emphasized the strength of the group:

This qualification is our answer on the field. We learned from the pain of the Copa do Brasil, and now our focus is entirely on seeking the title of this Libertadores.

Individual Standouts and the ‘Diniz Era’

The collective performance was boosted by high-level individual displays. Forward Memphis Depay, recently confirmed to stay for the remainder of the year, showed why he is the team’s main technical pillar, dominating duels and being crucial in offensive transitions.

Alongside him, young Breno Bidon shone again, solidifying his position as one of Corinthians‘ top scorers this season and earning public praise from Fernando Diniz.

For the M360 Team, the result shows a team that, under Diniz‘s guidance, is starting to find the necessary balance for knockout stages. The dedication of players like Gabriel Paulista, who celebrated the victory with the Fiel Torcida, reflects the synergy the squad has recovered at this decisive moment.

Headed to the Quarterfinals

Optimism fills the locker rooms and the stands. With the permanence of important names secured and a tactical system that is starting to show signs of maturity, Corinthians fans are already crunching numbers and projecting the path to the final.

This Wednesday’s qualification is, without a doubt, a turning point that once again places Corinthians as one of the protagonists of South American football in 2026.
