Proposed Bill Targets Athletes Playing Abroad and Betting Sponsorships in Brazilian Football.

A new bill currently moving through the National Congress could significantly shake up Brazilian football. The proposal aims to prohibit the call-up of players and coaches who play outside the country to represent the national team in official competitions. If approved, the measure would directly impact the formation of teams representing Brazil on the international stage, with exceptions only for friendly matches and promotional events, subject to specific authorization.

The End of Sports Betting Sponsorships?

In addition to the controversial call-up of athletes playing abroad, the bill also establishes a 180-day deadline for the termination of contracts between athletes and sports entities with sports betting and gambling companies. Non-compliance with this determination would lead to severe penalties, including the loss of access to federal public funds, tax incentives, and agreements with the Union (federal government).

The initiative extends to clubs, federations, and confederations, prohibiting them from entering into or maintaining sponsorship contracts with betting companies. Supporters of the bill argue that the measure is crucial to preserve the integrity of competitions and curb the use of football as a showcase for activities considered to have “high harmful potential.”

Preserving Integrity and Trust

The justification for such action lies in the belief that removing betting from the institutional environment of sports is a fundamental step to prevent conflicts of interest, match-fixing, economic harassment of athletes, and, in general, the erosion of public trust in competitions. The proposal therefore seeks to shield Brazilian football from influences that could compromise its credibility and fairness.

The debate is expected to be intense, with various sectors of the sport already taking positions on the potential impacts of the new legislation. The possibility of banning the call-up of players who play abroad, many of them in major European leagues, raises questions about the technical level of the Brazil national teams in official tournaments. Concurrently, the restriction on sponsorships from betting companies, which have become a significant source of revenue for many clubs, also generates apprehension. The next chapters of this legislative saga will be closely followed by fans, athletes, executives, and sponsors.
