Flamengo reaches the 100-goal mark this season, but the defense is showing a worrying dip in performance in 2026.

The 2026 season for Flamengo has been a tale of two extremes for the squad managed by Leonardo Jardim. While the attack is celebrating an impressive 100-goal milestone—achieved in fewer matches than the previous season—the defense is raising red flags, showing unprecedented fragility. Last Saturday’s (22nd) 2-1 loss to Cruzeiro in the 24th round of the Brazilian Serie A highlighted this duality.

The feat of scoring 100 goals in 2026 was reached in two fewer games compared to 2025. In that year, the Rubro-Negro conceded 29 goals in 52 games, an average of 0.55 per match. In the current season, however, the defensive numbers are alarming: 49 goals conceded in 52 matches, raising the average to 0.94 per game.

Defensive Performance Comparison

This defensive fragility is also reflected in the number of clean sheets. In 2025, Flamengo recorded 32 matches without conceding, while in 2026, the team has managed only 21 shutouts. This significant drop in defensive consistency has become a primary focus for the coaching staff.

Flamengo’s stats upon reaching 100 goals:

  • 2025:
    • 52 matches played
    • Top scorer: Arrascaeta (16 goals)
    • 28 different goalscorers
    • 29 goals conceded
    • 32 clean sheets
  • 2026:
    • 50 matches played
    • Top scorer: Pedro (25 goals)
    • 20 different goalscorers
    • 49 goals conceded
    • 21 clean sheets

Next Challenge and Table Outlook

Flamengo returns to the pitch this Sunday (30th) for a rivalry match against Botafogo at 4:00 PM (Brasília time) at the Maracanã, for the 25th round of the Brazilian Serie A. The match will be broadcast on Rede Globo, GE TV, and Premiere.

Despite the loss to Cruzeiro, Flamengo remains in second place in the Brazilian Serie A with 45 points. However, Palmeiras has extended its lead to six points, reaching 51, following their win against Vasco. Jardim‘s side must now not only maintain its attacking firepower but also urgently tighten its defense to stay in the race for the national title.
