Neymar’s future at Santos and the club’s financial challenges under Cuca.

Amidst anticipation for the return of one of its greatest idols, the Santos Futebol Clube still navigates uncertain waters regarding the planning for Neymar‘s return. Coach Cuca, in an interview after the friendly match against União São João, made it clear that definitive strategies for the star player’s rejoining, who is currently playing for the Brazil national team in the World Cup, are still up in the air.

The main variable, according to the coach, is Brazil’s performance in the international competition. The national team’s progression in the World Cup directly impacts Neymar‘s schedule, making it impossible to define a concrete plan at this moment. The coach emphasized the need to await the outcome of Brazil’s participation before outlining the rest period and the player’s integration into the Santos squad.

Plan for Neymar’s Return Remains Undecided

“For Neymar, there is no plan; we don’t know what will happen with Brazil. Hopefully, he goes all the way, makes it to the final; there is no plan at all. What is Neymar‘s plan? I don’t know how far he’ll go, if he’ll come back next week, or only at the end of the World Cup,” stated Cuca. The coach’s remarks highlight the complete dependence on the national team’s schedule for any decisions regarding the forward.

The coach also mentioned that after the World Cup, Neymar will be entitled to a rest period, the length of which will only be assessed after Brazil’s participation concludes. The idea is to balance the player’s recovery with Santos’ calendar needs, prioritizing the importance of matches.

“We have to wait for the World Cup to end to then be able to plan, to see the rest the player will need, the duration of the break he’ll have to take, aligned with the calendar and the importance of games. So, that hasn’t been done yet. He has a contract until the end of December, and unless something unforeseen happens, he will return,” Cuca added. Recently, Neymar‘s name was linked with FC Cincinnati of the MLS, but the American club reportedly withdrew from negotiations, according to *The Athletic*.

Debts and Confidence in Management

At another point in the interview, Cuca addressed the club’s delicate financial situation, admitting the existence of a debt with players regarding image rights. Despite the circumstances, the coach expressed confidence in the board to settle the outstanding amounts.

“Yes, it exists. Of course it exists. Everyone knows, and the staff is working to resolve it. We have full confidence in the president, but it’s there. And that hasn’t stopped the players from running, from training twice a day, as they are doing. So, we are very happy with all the professionalism they have shown,” affirmed the coach. Santos’ financial reality has already resulted in a transfer ban imposed by FIFA due to a debt with Monaco for the signing of Jean Lucas.

The uncertainty surrounding Neymar‘s return and the financial challenges add layers of complexity to Santos‘ current situation. The fans eagerly await better days and the definition of the next steps, trusting in the passion and love for the club that have always driven Alvinegro Praiano. The performance of the Brazil national team in the World Cup will be a crucial factor in unlocking the club’s planning and, perhaps, bringing extra relief amidst the turbulence.
