Zé Lucas’ decision to choose Cruzeiro over Flamengo has stirred the world of Brazilian football, with the young defensive midfielder explaining the project that tipped the scales in his favor.
The transfer market heated up with a fierce battle for one of Brazilian football’s most promising prospects: Zé Lucas. The 18-year-old defensive midfielder, a standout at Sport, found himself at the center of a tug-of-war between two giants, Flamengo and Cruzeiro. The negotiation involved significant figures and high expectations, eventually leading to the young talent’s surprising choice.
During his introductory press conference, which generated significant buzz this Tuesday (28), Zé Lucas did not hesitate to clarify the reasons behind his decision. He revealed that the sports project presented by the club from Minas Gerais was the major differentiator, guaranteeing him an immediate spot on the first team—something the Flamengo proposal did not offer right away.
Zé Lucas’ revelation: project and confidence
The young talent, in his first words as a new recruit, made sure to highlight the importance of the guidance from his management team. Zé Lucas emphasized that a thorough analysis of the scenario and Cruzeiro’s irresistible proposal were crucial.
“There was a lot of speculation last year about where I would go, but I left that to my staff. I trusted them a lot. When they came with this proposal from Cruzeiro, everything that Cruzeiro offered, I couldn’t refuse,” declared the midfielder. The warm welcome from coach Artur Jorge was also a deciding factor.
The dialogue with the head coach was fundamental for the player to feel valued and understand his role at the new club.
“He (coach Artur Jorge) welcomed me very well. He showed me everything he wanted from me, what he wanted me to do on the pitch, and showed me videos. He called me for a talk and helped me integrate with the other athletes. I have a lot to work on and a lot to develop with Artur Jorge,”added Zé Lucas, underlining the coach’s clear vision for his development.
A battle of giants: different offers
The crucial difference in the offers lay in the development plan for the athlete. While Flamengo intended to integrate Zé Lucas into their U-20 squad, with negotiations handled by the youth department, Cruzeiro ensured his immediate inclusion in the first-team group. This promise even prompted coach Artur Jorge to contact the player directly, demonstrating a genuine interest in his potential.
Financially, the superiority of Cruzeiro’s proposal was undeniable. Cruzeiro invested R$ 25.5 million to acquire 60% of Zé Lucas‘ economic rights. Conversely, Flamengo offered about R$ 6 million for only 10% of the rights. Although the Flamengo offer could reach similar values through performance incentives, the integration into the youth squad would have made meeting those targets more difficult, making the Cruzeiro option safer and more attractive.
Performance at Sport and next steps
At just 18 years old, Zé Lucas already stood out as an undisputed starter at Sport, accumulating 23 matches this season. His departure is a significant loss for the Pernambuco-based club, which, as part of the agreement, will receive two players on loan from Cruzeiro. The names are still being confirmed, but defensive midfielder Murilo Rikhman and forward Chico da Costa are the favorites to bolster the squad in Pernambuco.
Zé Lucas’ choice of Cruzeiro is not just a market move, but a reflection of the search for projects that offer visibility and immediate development to young talents. The club’s gamble on the midfielder, at the expense of Flamengo’s youth system, will now be tested on the pitch. The focus is now on the player’s performance in the top flight and how this decision will impact his future career.
The M360 Team highlighted the midfielder’s quality:
“The one who showed the most desire for Zé Lucas got him. The midfielder is a good player, having represented the Brazil U-17 national team, and would have been worth a greater effort from Flamengo to seal the deal. Let’s see if he will be used in the Libertadores Round of 16 clashes against Mengão.”
This perspective adds extra intrigue to a potential encounter between Cruzeiro and Flamengo in the Libertadores, where the youngster could be a key figure.
