The NBB derby between Flamengo and Botafogo has changed venues and will be played behind closed doors after Vasco secured the use of the Maracanã for the Copa Sudamericana.
Sports logistics in Rio de Janeiro took a direct hit this week due to a legal dispute surrounding the administration of the Maracanã sports complex. The traditional basketball matchup between Flamengo and Botafogo, valid for the second round of the NBB CAIXA 2026/27, had to be relocated from Maracanãzinho to Tijuca Tênis Clube.
The change was prompted by the confirmation that Vasco da Gama SAF will use the main stadium for the Copa Sudamericana semifinal against Boca Juniors. Since the basketball arena is located within the same complex, the court ruling that secured the use of the pitch for the Cruz-Maltino club ultimately made it unfeasible to operate the basketball game at the originally scheduled time and venue.
The impact of the court decision on the schedule
Vasco da Gama SAF appealed to the Court of Justice of the State of Rio de Janeiro to secure home-field advantage against the Argentine side. However, the legal victory created a domino effect that directly disrupted Flamengo‘s planning. The club from Gávea emphasized that the fixture had already been established on the official calendar since August and tickets were already on sale for the fans.
The club deeply regrets that a sporting event, properly organized months in advance, has been impacted by an external decision, resulting in fans being barred from attending and generating significant operational and financial disruptions for the institution and the supporters.
Consequences for the fans and next steps
Due to the tight window between the subpoena and the date of the event, there was no logistical feasibility to allow public access at the new arena, Tijuca Tênis Clube. As a result, the match, which will now take place at 6:00 PM next Tuesday (20), will be played behind closed doors.
Flamengo guaranteed that all fans who purchased tickets for the match at Maracanãzinho will receive a full refund. Instructions for the procedure will soon be provided through the team’s official channels. The episode highlights the complexity of managing major arenas in Rio de Janeiro, where the coexistence between football and other sports requires rigorous alignment to avoid losses to the sports calendar and, above all, to the fans.
