Following the success of the 2026 World Cup, the United States has begun discussions with FIFA to host the 2029 Club World Cup and build on the country’s soccer legacy.

The United States is looking to cement its position as the new epicenter of world soccer. Building on the positive impact of the 2026 World Cup, the country has already initiated talks with FIFA to host the 2029 Club World Cup. The move demonstrates the nation’s desire to capitalize on the infrastructure and fan enthusiasm showcased during the recent tournament.

Despite the interest, nothing is set in stone. Local authorities are awaiting an official stance from FIFA regarding the bidding process before making any formal proposals. The goal is to leverage the global exposure and record-breaking attendance from the last World Cup to bring another elite tournament to American soil.

Soccer as a reality in the US

The growth of the sport in the country is undeniable, and public engagement is its main asset. Andrew Giuliani, leader of the World Cup task force, emphasized the sport’s shift in status within the region:

“Soccer is no longer a story of the future in the United States. It is happening now. There is huge demand to watch the World Cup in the country.”

With a historic 6.5 million tickets sold in 2026 and an expected economic impact exceeding $11 billion, the US has established itself as a commercially attractive destination for soccer’s governing body.

Stiff competition and the future of the tournament

Despite the American push, the race to host the 2029 tournament promises to be intense. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has already expressed interest in bringing the event to Brazil, aiming to restore the tradition and passion of South American fans. Qatar, with its state-of-the-art infrastructure, also appears as a formidable competitor on the international radar.

Beyond the host selection, another crucial point is the potential expansion of the tournament from 32 to 48 participants—a move supported by European giants that will require exceptionally high logistical standards. FIFA is expected to make a final decision only in 2027, following its internal election process. Until then, backroom lobbying will continue to heat up as the soccer world keeps a close eye on which stage will host the elite clubs in 2029.
