The UEFA expresses a loss of confidence in Gianni Infantino following a “sordid” plan to sell FIFA shares, sparking a movement for a review of global football’s leadership.

The recent controversy involving FIFA President Gianni Infantino and his proposal to create a company to manage major competitions, such as the World Cup, and sell part of its shares to investors, has culminated in a strong statement from UEFA.

European football’s governing body stated it has lost confidence in the executive, labeling the plan as “sordid” and lacking transparency.

This stance by UEFA is not isolated; several federations, including those from England, Norway, and Wales, have already aligned with the European view and are calling for a reassessment of FIFA‘s leadership.

The episode highlights the growing tension behind the scenes of global football and the demand for greater clarity in decisions affecting the sport on a global scale.

Controversial Plan and Withdrawal

At the heart of the dispute was the proposal to create the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE). The idea was to establish a subsidiary majority-controlled by FIFA, but with the inclusion of minority investors.

The FFE would be responsible for consolidating the operations of major events, such as the World Cup and the Club World Cup, with the ambitious goal of raising up to $4.2 billion (R$ 21.5 billion).

However, the initiative was widely criticized for its lack of clarity in formulation.

Wave of Opposition and Boycott

The reaction was immediate and vigorous. UEFA was the first to publicly oppose the project, threatening that its 55 members would boycott future competitions organized by FIFA if the proposal was not withdrawn.

Quickly, other confederations, such as Concacaf (North, Central American and Caribbean Football Confederation) and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), also expressed their disapproval in official statements, reinforcing global pressure on Infantino.

UEFA’s Blunt Criticism

The pressure had an effect, and Gianni Infantino announced the plan’s withdrawal just three days after its revelation, admitting that the project “created divisions” and “no longer serves the interest of the objective established in the first place.”

However, UEFA did not hold back criticism, recalling transparency promises made by Infantino in 2016 when he was elected.

UEFA declared:

When Gianni Infantino asked for the trust and votes of FIFA member associations to elect him president in 2016, he said: “Of course, we have to be transparent. I have been like this for the last 15 years of my life at UEFA. You will have to participate daily in FIFA’s life,” before telling the representatives present: “FIFA’s money is your money. It is not the president’s money. You are the national associations, and FIFA‘s money should serve for the development of football, and not for anything else.” He did not fulfill either of those two promises. The sordid, obscure, and behind-the-scenes deal he orchestrated and tried to force through was anything but transparent.

Leadership Review on the Agenda

Support for UEFA‘s position extended across several national federations. The English Football Association (FA) fully supported UEFA, stating it was “time for a full and robust review of FIFA’s leadership and governance to ensure global football is managed transparently.”

The president of the Norwegian Football Federation (NFF), Lise Klaveness, praised UEFA‘s leadership and lamented that international cooperation had been jeopardized by “individual interests.”

The Football Association of Wales also reinforced the need for leadership that prioritizes the sport.

The episode of the stock sale proposal and the subsequent chain reaction expose weaknesses in FIFA’s governance and raise serious questions about transparency and ethics in global football administration.

The demand for a “full and robust review” of Gianni Infantino‘s leadership indicates that the debate over FIFA‘s future is far from over.

The football community expects steps that ensure the collective interests of the sport prevail over any particular agendas.
