After ten consecutive matches without being utilized by coach Leonardo Jardim, midfielder Saúl Ñíguez returned to the field in Flamengo‘s victory against Mirassol and is attempting to regain his place in the squad.

The red-and-black fans finally got to see Spanish midfielder Saúl Ñíguez back in a Flamengo jersey. The midfielder, who had been going through a long period of ostracism under Leonardo Jardim, entered the field in the second half of the match against Mirassol at the Maracanã, replacing Jorge Carrascal. The player’s appearance puts an end, at least temporarily, to rumors about his possible dissatisfaction and an early departure from the Rio de Janeiro club.

Saúl‘s return comes at a crucial moment in the season. The player had not played since May 30th, in a match valid for the Brazilian Serie A against Coritiba. Since then, the athlete was overlooked for ten consecutive games, raising questions about the coach’s lineup criteria, as officially, there was no injury diagnosis to justify the midfielder’s prolonged absence, with the exception of a brief flu-like illness.

Numbers and Performance on Return

On the field, during the 18 minutes he was present, Saúl sought to prove himself to the coaching staff. With nine touches on the ball, the Spanish player maintained passing accuracy and showed defensive willingness. The defensive midfielder finished the match with five accurate passes, two successful tackles, and two ground duels won, in addition to one important ball recovery. The player’s demeanor on the field suggests that, despite his time on the bench, he aims to remain a useful asset in the squad.

“Increasingly, we have less information about club training sessions. So, it’s not even possible to claim that Saúl trains poorly to agree with Leonardo Jardim. All that’s left is to accept it,” highlighted the Equipe M360 regarding the player’s situation.

Outlook for Upcoming Matches

Saúl Ñíguez‘s future at Mais Querido could quickly see new developments. Flamengo is monitoring the physical condition of key players like Erick Pulgar and Evertton Araújo, who left the field against Mirassol feeling pain. Should the medical department confirm absences for the team’s upcoming commitments, the number 8 emerges as an immediate alternative to fill the midfield.

Signed in July 2025 with a long-term contract valid until the end of 2028, Saúl has made 34 appearances for the club. With the season winding down and key decisions ahead, the Spaniard’s versatility could be an asset for Leonardo Jardim, provided the player can maintain consistency and earn the necessary trust from the coaching staff to be included in the squad more frequently.
