Goalkeeper Rossi hit back at recent criticism following Flamengo‘s victory in the clásico against Fluminense, highlighting his reliability between the posts and calling for recognition after decisive displays.
After a period of intense media pressure, goalkeeper Rossi used the mixed zone to respond to his critics. A fundamental piece in Flamengo‘s tactical setup, the player labeled the assessments of his performance following the midweek match against Santos as unfair.
The 1-0 win over Fluminense this Sunday (11) provided the backdrop for the goalkeeper to vent. For the athlete, the club’s internal analysis differs drastically from the tone adopted by the public and the press in recent days, reinforcing that the search for scapegoats during crucial moments of the season is counterproductive for the squad.
The goalkeeper’s defense and focus on continuity
Rossi maintained his stance that his technical level remains high. According to him, the clash against the Santos side was shaping up to be one of the most solid displays of his recent run, compromised only by an isolated play that does not reflect the totality of his performance or the stability of the Flamengo goal.
“A villain to you guys. The personal analysis we do on a daily basis with the goalkeeper coach is that my game against Santos was one of the safest I had played, right up until the goal play. Everything that was said, trying to find a scapegoat, is unjustifiable. I think a lot of people who talked about me on Thursday and Friday should keep talking about me on Monday, but now saying good things.”
Decisive performance in the clásico
Rossi‘s performance against Fluminense validated his confidence. Although Flamengo exercised greater territorial control, the goalkeeper was called into action at crucial moments. In the first half, he prevented the opening goal by tipping away a long-range shot from Martinelli.
Later on, with the score already in favor of the Gávea club, the goalkeeper showed sharp reflexes to neutralize a one-on-one attempt by Serna. The two-stage save secured the positive result and reaffirmed the player’s importance for the remainder of the calendar.
The road to the Libertadores
The response on the pitch comes at a crucial moment of the season. With renewed morale, Flamengo turns all its attention to the Copa Libertadores semifinals. The challenge now is against Argentina’s Estudiantes.
The first leg of this matchup will take place next Thursday (15) at 9:30 PM (Brasília time) at the UNO stadium in La Plata. With Rossi secured in goal, the team looks to build an important advantage before deciding the spot in the final at home, at the Maracanã, on October 22. On the other side of the bracket, Fluminense and Palmeiras battle to stay in the continental competition.
