Goalkeeper Agustín Rossi was confronted by Flamengo fans after a crucial buildup error led to a draw and a red card against Santos in the Brazilian Serie A.
The atmosphere turned hostile for goalkeeper Agustín Rossi as he left the pitch at Vila Belmiro last Thursday (8). A video that quickly spread across social media showed the frustration of Flamengo supporters, who harshly protested against the player following the 2-2 draw with Santos in the 29th round of the national tournament. The catalyst for the fans’ anger was a mistake in the buildup that cost the team a win and narrowed the Red-Blacks’ lead at the top of the table.
The pivotal moment occurred in the 27th minute of the second half, when the Rio de Janeiro side was comfortably leading 2-0 with goals from Danilo and Lucas Paquetá. Attempting to play out from the back, the Argentine goalkeeper played a short pass inside the box to midfielder Jorginho. Under heavy pressure, the midfielder lost control of the ball and handled it. After a VAR review, referee Anderson Daronco awarded a penalty and sent off the Flamengo player.
Santos’ comeback and impact on the standings
From the penalty spot, star player Neymar, who had come on at halftime, reduced the deficit and sparked Santos‘ comeback. Shortly after, following a set piece that resulted in a foul on Gabigol, the number 10 himself leveled the score at Vila Belmiro, sealing a draw that frustrated Mais Querido‘s plans.
With the stumble, Flamengo maintained the championship lead, now with 61 points. However, the gap to second-place Palmeiras shrunk to just a single point, heating up the race for the national title with just a few rounds remaining in the competition.
Collective accountability and coaching staff backing
In his post-match press conference, head coach Leonardo Jardim sought to shield the goalkeeper, treating the play as a collective failure in positioning and decision-making rather than pointing a finger at a single culprit for the setback on the coast of São Paulo.
Leonardo Jardim stated:
“We managed the situation poorly. Our entire team bears responsibility; it’s not just one mistake. We didn’t provide a longer passing option, we opted to play out under pressure. I don’t know if there was a foul on Jorginho’s back, but we created the situation for the opponent.”
This is not the first time the foreign goalkeeper has faced turbulence with a section of the fanbase this season. In September, during a Copa Libertadores match against Ecuador’s Independiente del Valle, the player even argued with a fan in the Maracanã stands after being accused of a lack of effort, though he received widespread support from the rest of the stadium at the time.
Upcoming challenges of the season
The squad led by Leonardo Jardim has no time to dwell on the result on the coast of São Paulo. Focus now turns entirely to the next Brazilian Serie A fixture, scheduled for this Sunday (11) at 5:30 PM, when Flamengo faces Fluminense at the Maracanã.
In addition to the crucial state derby for their campaign in the league, the Rio club is already eyeing the crucial Copa Libertadores semifinal matchups against Argentina’s Estudiantes, where they will look to keep the dream of lifting another continental trophy alive.
