In stoppage time of the first half, at the 47th minute, midfielder Carrascal led a promising attack. After dribbling past defender Denilson, the Flamengo player was sprinting toward the goal when he was brought down.
According to Law 12 of the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the foul denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, which warrants a straight red card. However, Rafael Klein opted to issue only a yellow card, triggering a strong reaction from the Flamengo players.
The situation was compounded by the decision of the Video Assistant Referee, Rafael Traci, who upheld the on-field call without requesting a pitch-side review.
