Referee Rafael Klein faces renewed criticism following controversial officiating during Flamengo’s match against Mirassol.
Flamengo once again finds itself at the center of refereeing discussions in the Brazilian Serie A. This time, the controversy unfolded at Estádio Maião during the match against Mirassol for the 23rd round.
Despite an impressive 4-0 victory, the Rio de Janeiro club pointed to decisions that could have impacted the course of the game, sparking frustration with referee Rafael Klein‘s performance.
Controversial decision late in the first half
In stoppage time of the first half, at the 47th minute, midfielder Carrascal led a promising attack. After dribbling past defender Denilson, the Flamengo player was sprinting toward the goal when he was brought down.
According to Law 12 of the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the foul denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, which warrants a straight red card. However, Rafael Klein opted to issue only a yellow card, triggering a strong reaction from the Flamengo players.
The situation was compounded by the decision of the Video Assistant Referee, Rafael Traci, who upheld the on-field call without requesting a pitch-side review. Flamengo themselves detailed the play on their social media channels, emphasizing that the foul prevented Carrascal from going one-on-one with the goalkeeper and that the punishment was disproportionate.
History of controversy with the referee
The appointment of Rafael Klein for Flamengo matches has been a constant point of contention. The club’s board has expressed dissatisfaction over perceived inconsistencies in his decision-making.
Earlier this season, the same referee faced criticism for sending off Carrascal in the Brazilian Super Cup against Corinthians following a change in officiating criteria between halves. Another notable episode occurred at Arena da Baixada, where a reckless tackle by Felipinho on Lucas Paquetá resulted in only a yellow card.
Behind the scenes at Flamengo, the string of questionable calls and the apparent lack of technical rigor from Rafael Klein continue to fuel frustration. Despite formal complaints to the CBF, the official continues to be assigned to the team’s matches.
The standard of officiating remains a subject of intense debate. There is an expectation that the CBF will take steps to ensure greater clarity, preventing match outcomes from being compromised by errors that contradict the rules of the game.
For now, Flamengo remains focused on their Brazilian Serie A campaign, striving to overcome obstacles both on and off the pitch.
