The Public Prosecutor’s Office has requested government intervention to ensure that Vasco can host Boca Juniors at the Maracanã, following a court decision that denied the club’s request.

The behind-the-scenes battle to determine the venue for the Copa Sudamericana semifinal has reached a critical stage with the intervention of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the State of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ).

The state agency sent an official letter to the government demanding a position on the use of the Maracanã, after the Judiciary rejected an injunction filed by Vasco da Gama against the current management.

The move intensifies the debate over the use of the state’s premier sports facility for major international matches.

The controversy began when Fla-Flu Serviços S.A. refused the club’s request to host the South American clash, citing technical restrictions, such as the need to preserve the pitch, which was recently replaced following an NFL event.

Although the courts initially supported the concessionaire’s arguments, the situation has shifted with the involvement of public security authorities and the MPRJ, who argue that matters of public interest take precedence over private contractual agreements.

Pressure from the Public Prosecutor’s Office and public safety

In the official document signed by Attorney General Antônio José Campos Moreira, the focus of the discussion has moved beyond purely operational concerns to encompass public order and urban mobility in Rio de Janeiro.

Regarding the serious repercussions of denying the request to host the Vasco da Gama vs. Boca Juniors match at Maracanã… the matter transcends property and operational issues, given the potential to compromise public safety and urban mobility… The primary public interest of the issue is therefore paramount, suggesting intervention by the Granting Authority…

This perspective is reinforced by BEPE (Specialized Stadium Policing Battalion), which classified São Januário stadium as inadequate to host Boca Juniors fans due to logistical and surrounding area constraints.

On the other hand, the security agency indicated that Nilton Santos Stadium is a viable option, but highlighted the Maracanã as the ideal alternative to absorb the massive flow of spectators.

Alternatives and the road ahead

While Vasco president Pedrinho exhausts all legal and political avenues to secure the Maracanã, the club is closely monitoring the deadline set by CONMEBOL.

São Januário remains a secondary plan, requiring structural renovations to increase visitor capacity, while Nilton Santos has emerged as a viable Plan B should the stalemate with the Fla-Flu Consortium remain unresolved.
