The CEO of the Premier League has lashed out at Gianni Infantino‘s management of FIFA, labeling the organization’s recent projects a move toward the “self-destruction” of world football.

English football leadership has turned up the heat on Gianni Infantino‘s administration. In pointed remarks, Richard Masters, CEO of the Premier League, heavily criticized the proposal to turn the World Cup into a business subsidized by outside investors, suggesting that football’s governing body is losing its essence as a non-profit organization.

Masters‘ stance reflects the growing discontent among European federations regarding the centralization of power. For the executive, FIFA should act strictly as a guardian of sporting heritage, prioritizing the long-term sustainability of the sport rather than commercial strategies that, according to him, compromise the integrity of the competition.

Self-destruction and the future of the organization

Masters‘ central criticism revolves around the creation of a subsidiary to manage the World Cup, a project he considers harmful.

“This is a self-inflicted wound. The organization has hit the self-destruct button, and the consequences of that are now reflected in the solutions that need to be found,” said the CEO in an interview covered by the M360 Team.

For the executive, FIFA‘s leadership needs to be rethought urgently, requiring the organization to be managed with greater transparency and a focus on the sport’s historical values.

Support for the FA and the push for renewal

The executive also reinforced his support for the English Football Association (FA), which withdrew its public backing for Infantino‘s reelection. In Masters‘ view, it is imperative that a “unity candidate” emerges for next year’s election, with a primary commitment to a deep reform of the presidency’s role.

“World football needs strong, principled, independent leaders who are willing to speak up, to challenge when necessary, and to stand firm for their values and the values of world football,” he stated.

Richard Masters‘ stance signals unprecedented political pressure behind the scenes at FIFA. As the elections approach, the debate over the organization’s governance model promises to dominate the agenda of upcoming international meetings, forcing the current administration to deal with increasing isolation from the wealthiest and most influential leagues on the planet.
