The legendary jersey worn by King Pelé in the 1958 World Cup final was sold in New York for R$27 million, becoming one of the most valuable relics in history.
The world of sports memorabilia experienced a moment of euphoria this Thursday (16). The legendary blue jersey worn by the eternal King Pelé in the 1958 World Cup final was auctioned by the renowned house Sotheby’s, in New York. The item, which represents the awakening of a genius to the world stage, reached the impressive figure of US$4.9 million, approximately R$27 million at the current exchange rate.
The piece is not just fabric, but a piece of the Brazilian football soul. With the iconic number 10 on its back, the uniform witnessed the genius of a 17-year-old who, against Sweden, enchanted the world by scoring two goals in a 5-2 victory, solidifying the Brazil national team‘s first world title.
A Legacy Spanning Generations
The journey of this relic is as fascinating as the football of the Athlete of the Century. After the final whistle in 1958, the King gifted the jersey to his teammate, Dida. For decades, the garment remained with the former player’s family, preserved as a treasure of inestimable value before beginning a journey through museums and specialized auctions.
“The mystique of 1958 will never die, as it was the foundation that built the Brazil national team’s five championships and transformed football into a national religion.”
The Pinnacle and Historical Records
Despite expectations of reaching the US$6 million mark, the final price fell slightly short of the initial projection. Nevertheless, the sale was a landmark, establishing the item as the second most expensive football jersey ever sold at official auction. The top spot remains with the jersey worn by Diego Maradona in the 1986 World Cup, sold for an astronomical US$9.3 million.
The collector’s market shows that passion for the sport goes far beyond the pitch. Acquired by an anonymous buyer, Pelé‘s jersey reignites the debate about the historical value of the artifacts that defined the sport. For Brazilian fans, the financial value is merely a detail compared to the magnitude of the legacy left by the King, who even today, with Grit, Love, and Passion, continues to be the greatest reference in world sports.
