In an exclusive interview with the M360 Team, star player Lucas Paquetá opens up about his dream of lifting the Libertadores trophy and targets revenge against Cruzeiro.
Expectations for the knockout stage of the Copa Libertadores have reached a new level at Ninho do Urubu. Midfielder Lucas Paquetá, a major signing and Flamengo’s most expensive acquisition in history, did not hide his ambition to transform his relationship with the tournament: from a fan who witnessed the club’s glories to a protagonist seeking the continental title.
For the player, wearing the Sacred Jersey in South America’s most important competition is the fulfillment of a long-held desire. In an emotional statement, the athlete emphasized that the connection with the fans and the club’s history give special weight to his current journey in the red-and-black colors.
The desire to make history
Paquetá‘s goal goes beyond technical achievement; he seeks a real connection with the feeling in the stands. The player revealed that he is already visualizing the ideal celebration alongside the fans.
“It’s a competition that I dream of winning with this jersey. I was very happy as a fan, throughout all these years, watching all of Flamengo’s achievements. And today, once again, being able to take the field to wear the Flamengo jersey in this competition is special for me.”
The midfielder further detailed his desire to share the triumph with the red-and-black faithful:
“I hope I can win this competition and also enjoy this moment as a player. But, above all else, what I most think about experiencing is that electric parade celebrating a Libertadores title with the Flamengo fans. I keep visualizing it in my head.”
Revenge against Cruzeiro
Fate holds a significant challenge right in the Round of 16. The clash against Cruzeiro on August 12 brings back memories of the 2018 elimination. The player acknowledges that the matchup has a sense of “unfinished business” and hopes to emerge victorious this time.
“I would be lying if I said I don’t think about this game. It’s something special for me. It was an elimination that made me sad. I hope to come out on top this time.”
The first leg will take place at the Mineirão Stadium at 9:30 PM, with broadcasts on Globo, GE TV, and Paramount+. The second leg to decide qualification occurs on August 19 at the Maracanã Stadium. If they advance, Flamengo will continue in a competitive bracket, facing Tolima or Independiente Del Valle in the quarterfinals, and potentially meeting teams like Corinthians or Argentine clubs in later stages.
