Palmeiras Gives Up on New Signings After Danilo Deal Falls Through, Focuses on Retaining Current Squad.
Palmeiras has ended its pursuit in the transfer market following a failed negotiation for defensive midfielder Danilo, from Botafogo. The club’s board, in conjunction with the coaching staff, has decided that the current squad, strengthened by investments exceeding R$700 million since mid-last year, possesses the necessary quality and depth to compete for all titles this season: the Brazilian Serie A, Copa Libertadores, and Copa do Brasil.
Danilo: The “Cherry on Top” That Didn’t Arrive
Palmeiras‘s top priority in the transfer market was precisely Danilo. The player was seen as a unique addition, capable of further enhancing an already competitive roster. Although the board maintains its stance of being attentive to opportunities, the active search for new signings has officially been discontinued.
“Palmeiras’s interest is exclusively in Danilo. If Danilo doesn’t come, I think our squad is extremely strong for this season,” stated president Leila Pereira last week, reinforcing confidence in the team.
Finances in Order and Focus on Retention
The decision not to pursue other reinforcements also aligns with the club’s financial situation. In the first five months of the year, Palmeiras recorded a deficit of R$66 million, and signing Danilo would have worsened this condition. The priority now is to retain the already established players.
The board’s efforts are concentrated on protecting the players most sought after by other clubs. Allan, Mauricio, and Flaco López are the names attracting the most market attention at the moment, and the objective is to ensure they remain with Palmeiras for future competitions.
