Dutch football is taking a stricter stance against the use of fireworks during matches. From now on, any throwing or launching of pyrotechnic devices towards the field or stands will result in the immediate and definitive suspension of the game.
The decision, announced by the Ministry of Justice and Security in collaboration with the KNVB and the police, aims to curb misbehavior and violence in stadiums.
Protocol Change: From Postponement to Total Interruption
Until now, incidents involving fireworks could lead to temporary stoppages, with the possibility of resuming the match. However, the new directive mandates the immediate end of the contest.
Minister of Justice, David van Weel, emphasized the need for clarity in consequences for fans:
It will no longer be paused, we will no longer assess, no: it will be interrupted. Everyone goes home.
The measure seeks to eliminate ambiguities in rule enforcement, making it clear that intimidation or threats will not exempt offenders from penalties.

This change in protocol removes the decision-making power over match resumption from mayors and club directors, centralizing the definitive interruption in cases of fireworks usage.
The KNVB is also studying additional measures and technological possibilities to combat the problem.
Recently, matches such as SC Cambuur vs. Feyenoord and FC Utrecht vs. Go Ahead Eagles were the scene of incidents that highlighted the urgency for more drastic actions.
The case of the latter match, which ended with its suspension after more objects were thrown, exemplifies the gravity of the situation and the need for stricter enforcement of the new rules.
