Flamengo secures a new influx of cash thanks to the transfer of André Luiz, a forward developed in the club’s youth academy, to MLS side Sporting Kansas City.
The product of Ninho do Urubu has a new home. Forward André Luiz was officially announced by Sporting Kansas City, based in the United States, in a transaction that made waves in the international transfer market. The American club paid $22 million—approximately R$ 112 million at the current exchange rate—to sign the player from Greek club Olympiacos.
The financial impact for Mengão
As the club responsible for the player’s development, Flamengo is entitled to a portion of the FIFA solidarity mechanism. This amount is shared with América-RJ, where the player took his first steps before arriving at Gávea. With the 5% distribution stipulated by the rule, the expectation is that Flamengo will pocket an amount between R$ 2 million and R$ 4 million.
Negotiation details
The operation was complex and took about two months to be finalized. The total deal of $22 million consists of $18 million (R$ 91.6 million) in fixed fees and $4 million (R$ 20.4 million) tied to performance-based incentives.
“With this transfer fee, André Luiz joins the select group of the largest signings in MLS history, ranking third,”noted the specialized press regarding the financial scale of the transfer.
André Luiz’s background
Developing through the ranks in 2020, André Luiz wore the sacred jersey in nine matches for the professional team between 2021 and 2023. After leaving Rio de Janeiro, the forward played in Portuguese football—representing Estrela Amadora and Rio Ave—before arriving at Olympiacos in January of this year. Now, he has signed a deal with the Major League Soccer team until June 2031, looking to establish himself as one of the league’s primary attacking threats.
For the Nação, who always follow the success of their “sons” around the world, the move represents not only a recognition of the quality of Flamengo’s youth system but also a welcome boost to the club’s finances.
