Léo Ortiz Criticizes Maracanã Pitch, Justifies Artificial Turf After Flamengo’s Libertadores Qualification

The condition of the Maracanã pitch has become a major talking point following Flamengo‘s advancement to the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores. In a post-match interview after the 1-1 draw against Independiente del Valle (ECU), defender Léo Ortiz did not hold back in describing the field conditions, calling it “practically unplayable.”

The player emphasized that the poor state of the stadium’s natural grass strengthens the arguments of those advocating for the adoption of artificial turf on Brazilian pitches. Flamengo, which historically prioritizes natural grass quality, finds itself in a dilemma.

Léo Ortiz Argues for Artificial Turf

“I hope whoever can do something about it will. Because it’s really very difficult to play, even more so for a team that likes to play with the ball like we do,” stated Léo Ortiz.

I hope whoever can do something about it will. Because it’s really very difficult to play, even more so for a team that likes to play with the ball like we do.

He elaborated on his reasoning, admitting that the current state of the pitch might vindicate artificial turf supporters:

Sometimes, you have to give them credit. With pitches like this, it really motivates the push for artificial turf. The biggest culprit for having artificial turf in Brazil is the natural grass being in this condition.

Despite criticizing the pitch, Léo Ortiz made a point to stress that the field’s condition should not be an excuse for the team’s performance, which he deemed below expectations in all aspects. However, concern over pitch maintenance for the remainder of the season is evident, especially with upcoming events like the NFL.

Concerns Over Calendar and Other Players

Léo Ortiz‘s comments resonated with his teammates. Midfielder Arrascaeta and goalkeeper Rossi also expressed dissatisfaction with the pitch quality, describing it as increasingly worse and unsuitable for Flamengo‘s style of play.

The situation is compounded by the confirmation of the NFL Rio Game 2026, featuring the Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys, scheduled for September 27 at the Maracanã. This event, occurring during a FIFA international break, prevents the period from being used for pitch recovery and improvement.

Flamengo has another commitment at the Maracanã this Sunday (20th), when they face Red Bull Bragantino in the 28th round of the Brazilian Serie A. The pitch’s quality, already a source of controversy, continues to be a point of concern for the coaching staff and the Flamengo supporters.
