Diego Simeone confirms Julián Álvarez’s absence and addresses crisis at Atlético de Madrid
The tension between Atlético de Madrid and forward Julián Álvarez has reached a new level. The player has missed training for the third consecutive time and, as a result, is out of this Saturday’s clash against Sevilla in LaLiga.
Head coach Diego Simeone confirmed the Argentine’s absence from the squad list and commented on the situation surrounding the player’s future at the club.
Simeone stands firm and focuses on Sevilla
In a press conference, Simeone was emphatic regarding Julián Álvarez‘s situation:
I understand that all the questions will be about Julián. The club has been very clear and firm about what is going to happen. I remain in the same position, hoping that, from a sporting standpoint, I can help him continue to be the crucial player he is for us. My focus is on Sevilla. Obviously, Julián won’t be there, and we have to compete against an opponent that has won two games and is very confident.
Absences and jeers mark Julián Álvarez’s current moment
The Spanish press points to indispositions as the justification for Álvarez‘s missed training sessions. The atmosphere for the forward has been hostile, with jeers from Atlético fans during the squad’s presentation for the 26/27 season and also when he was substituted in the draw against Villarreal.
Even in the face of the provocations and the impasse, Simeone reiterated his focus on the team:
I understand the question and the follow-up, but I think I have already explained my point of view. I don’t have much more to say. From the moment he returns to training, I will do everything I can so that he feels as important as he always has.
Atlético de Madrid faces Sevilla this Saturday at 4:30 PM (Brasília time) at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán stadium, in a match valid for the third round of LaLiga.
Atlético de Madrid CEO details Julián Álvarez’s state
Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, CEO of Atlético de Madrid, expressed concern about the player’s emotional state:
Julián is really struggling. There were people who took it upon themselves to mislead and confuse him. I am very sorry, because I know him. He is a great person, a great professional, and a great player, who is completely confused and going through a very difficult situation in both his personal and professional life.
The crisis intensified after Julián Álvarez publicly expressed his desire to transfer to Barcelona, a club that reportedly offered around 100 million euros. Atlético, however, rejected the proposal and reiterated that there is no intention to negotiate the player.
Other European giants, such as Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, have also shown interest, with Vini Jr.‘s team even offering 150 million euros.
The Madrid club published an official statement, backed by the Board of Directors, stating that it will not open talks with Barcelona, citing a lack of ethics and professionalism in the way the interest in the athlete was handled.
Arsenal emerges as an alternative for Julián Álvarez
With the European transfer market closing next Tuesday, Arsenal has emerged as an alternative for Julián Álvarez‘s future.
The English club has shown interest in signing the forward and maintains contact with the player’s representatives, counting on the mediation of Andrea Berta, Arsenal’s sporting director who previously worked at Atlético de Madrid. The forward has only four days left to resolve his situation.
