Young midfielder Joshua was the standout player as Flamengo advanced past Vasco, securing a spot in the Round of 16 of the U-20 Copa do Brasil.
Thursday brought intense emotions to the Estádio Luso-Brasileiro for Flamengo‘s youth academy. In an electrifying showdown of the traditional Clássico dos Milhões, the red-and-black youngsters overcame rival Vasco on penalties, securing a heroic qualification for the next phase of the U-20 Copa do Brasil.
The star of the night was number 10 Joshua, widely recognized as one of the brightest gems in Flamengo’s youth system. In addition to finding the back of the net during regulation time, the midfielder showed tremendous character by converting the decisive penalty that sealed the triumph after a 2-2 draw.
Joshua‘s starring role in the derby
The match demanded resilience from the squad led by coach Marcelo Salazar. When the opponent’s lead threatened Flamengo‘s stay in the national tournament, Joshua stepped up to equalize and keep the team alive in the competition.
Next, tension took over during the penalty shootout. It fell to the young talent to take the final spot-kick of the series. With a subtle chip and immense composure, the midfielder sent the Vasco goalkeeper the wrong way to ignite the celebrations of the fans in attendance.
The midfielder showed he has that special spark by leading the team to qualification and securing advancement in the national tournament.
Rise and backing from the senior squad
His impressive performance in the youth ranks reflects the transition period the athlete is experiencing under the watchful eye of the senior coaching staff. Joshua has already had opportunities to train with the professionals and caught the eye during the mid-season training camp in Portugal.
The valuation of the young gem extends behind the scenes at the Rio de Janeiro club. Protected by a long-term contract and a hefty release clause, the midfielder has already drawn interest from foreign markets, although the board maintains a strict stance regarding the negotiation of its top talents.
Upcoming challenges for the youth team
With their ticket punched to face Criciúma in the Round of 16 of the U-20 Copa do Brasil, the red-and-black squad quickly shifts focus. The calendar reserves yet another chapter of the derby against Vasco, scheduled for next Sunday at 11:00 AM (Brasília time), this time for the U-20 Campeonato Carioca.
