Flamengo overcomes Vasco da Gama on penalties after thrilling draw at Estádio Luso-Brasileiro, securing a spot in the next phase of the Copa do Brasil U-20.
Rubro-Negro’s supremacy has once again been confirmed in the youth divisions of Brazilian football. In a derby match played this Thursday (08), Flamengo eliminated Vasco da Gama in the second phase of the Copa do Brasil U-20, reaffirming a recent history of superiority in direct confrontations against their Rio de Janeiro rival.
The duel, held at Estádio Luso-Brasileiro on Ilha do Governador, was marked by twists and turns and plenty of emotion. After an electrifying 2-2 draw in regulation time, qualification was decided from the penalty spot, where the precision of the Garotos do Ninho (Ninho’s Boys) made the difference in keeping the dream of the national title alive.
Emotion until the final minute in the derby
The match began with the Cruz-Maltino team showing more initiative on the field. Their offensive stance paid off in the first half when Andrey Fernandes capitalized on a cross from the left and opened the scoring for the visitors in the 36th minute, scoring with his chest.
Upon returning from the break, the Rubro-Negro reaction was immediate. In the 12th minute, Caio Joshua equalized the score by converting a penalty. Shortly after, in the 16th minute, Josmar turned the score around after a precise assist from Argentinian Sayago, igniting the crowd present in Rio de Janeiro.
Even with the expulsion of Avellar from Vasco’s side, Vasco da Gama found the strength to equalize the score. In the 35th minute of the second half, Andrey Fernandes took advantage of a defensive slip-up to score his second goal of the game, sealing the 2-2 draw and sending the match to penalties.
Composure from the spot and qualification
In the decisive penalty shootout, tension gripped the field. While their rival missed their first two attempts, Flamengo counted on conversions from players like João Victor, Andrew Nathan, Juliano, and Joshua to secure a 4-3 victory.
The coaching staff highlighted after the final whistle:
The strength of our group showed in the most difficult moments of the match, demonstrating the winning DNA we aim to instill in our athletes’ development.
With qualification secured, Flamengo maintains its momentum this season and now awaits the determination of their next opponent in the round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil U-20. The Rio de Janeiro club remains firmly in pursuit of another significant title in the national youth scene.
