The STJD imposes a strict suspension on Inter defender Victor Gabriel after a play that caused a severe injury to forward Gabriel Pec during a Brazilian Serie A match.
The Brazilian football landscape has been shaken by an exemplary decision from the Superior Sports Justice Tribunal (STJD). Internacional defender Victor Gabriel has been handed an unusual suspension: he will be sidelined until Cruzeiro player Gabriel Pec returns to training activities, with a maximum limit of 180 days.
The ruling directly reflects the match between the two teams on July 22. In a fateful incident, a hard tackle by Victor Gabriel resulted in a fractured tibia for Gabriel Pec, sidelining the forward for an estimated three to four months of recovery.
Application of the CBJD
The STJD Prosecution based its complaint on paragraph 3 of article 254 of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice. This provision allows for an indefinite suspension, provided the victim remains unable to perform their profession. Although the case rapporteur suggested a standard six-game penalty, the majority of the auditors determined that the severity of the injury demanded a more severe measure.
“The decision sets an important precedent for the physical integrity of athletes in national football, making the victim’s recovery time a central parameter for punishing the offender.”
Remorseful Atmosphere
During the tribunal session, Victor Gabriel did not hide his dejection. The player, who had already publicly expressed himself through his social media channels shortly after the incident, reiterated his apology to those present. Visibly emotional, the defender lamented the outcome of the play, reaffirming that his intention was never to cause such a severe injury to a fellow professional.
For Internacional, Victor Gabriel‘s absence presents an additional challenge for the remainder of the season. The club now needs to reorganize its defensive system while awaiting the progress of Gabriel Pec‘s recovery, as his return to the field remains the primary indicator for the fulfillment of the penalty imposed by the tribunal.
