Marcão, father and agent of midfielder Gerson, challenges Flamengo‘s management amid a legal dispute and reveals details of his visit to the Maracanã during the Libertadores.
The relationship between Gerson‘s family and Flamengo‘s top brass remains strained, marked by turbulent interactions and pointed public statements. Recently, Marcão, the player’s father and representative, used the media to publicly refute accusations made by the Rio de Janeiro club in court. The heart of the conflict lies in a multi-million dollar financial dispute, in which the Rubro-Negro is claiming approximately R$ 42.7 million regarding an alleged early contract termination.
In an interview with ESPN Brasil, Marcão vehemently denied receiving any advance payments during the negotiations for the midfielder. The agent labeled the management’s claims as a “setup” and insisted that the truth behind the case will come to light, maintaining his defiant tone against the club’s current leadership.
Marcão stated:
This [lawsuit] was a setup by those guys running Flamengo. It has nothing to do with reality. I didn’t take R$ 42 million. They are claiming I took that amount in advance… It’s a lie! I can’t say much about this ongoing process, but I won’t stay silent. The truth defends me.
The legal landscape
The court battle involves significant sums that are damaging the image of both parties. Flamengo maintains that there was a unilateral breach of contract, which serves as the basis for their collection claim. On the other hand, Gerson‘s camp refutes the calculations and the nature of the debt identified by the club. According to the Equipe M360, the outcome of this process is highly anticipated, both for its financial impact on the club and the potential influence it may have on the player’s future at Gávea.
Presence at the Maracanã
Even amidst the crisis, Marcão attended the Maracanã last Wednesday (19), during the Libertadores match between Flamengo and Cruzeiro. The agent reported watching the game directly from the section designated for the visiting Cruzeiro fans, opting to ensure his own safety. Marcão spoke openly, noting that despite the friction with the club, he remains well-liked by the Flamengo fanbase.
He commented:
There was no problem at all (at the Maracanã), I stayed in the Cruzeiro section… I looked after my own security. If I don’t look after myself, no one will. I went to the Cruzeiro crowd and was very well received, very well accepted.
He concluded:
The Flamengo fans are the least to blame (for the situation involving Gerson). There are a bunch of “little robots,” people who want to target me. I’m a man of the people, I’m well-loved by a part of the Flamengo fanbase, but unfortunately, inside the club, things are complicated. It has to be the way the board wants it.
Next steps on the pitch
While the legal dispute moves forward, the focus of the main squad returns entirely to their next fixture. Flamengo faces Cruzeiro again this Saturday (22), at 8:30 PM (Brasília time), in a decisive Brazilian Serie A match. The game, which will take place at the Mineirão, is crucial for the team’s standing in the league table.
At a time when the team is also preparing for the Libertadores quarter-finals, the unfolding of these controversies, combined with their performance on the field, will dictate the atmosphere behind the scenes at Ninho do Urubu in the coming months.
